McCoy 40 and OS 49

I have just won a McCoy 40 Lightening Case version, from Ebay (very good deal!) it looks new, was this a better version than the earlier plain case version, or does the piston need hardening, to use a silencer?
I also won a boxed OS49 from '62, offset plug, once again this was a very, very good deal, its in good condition apart from a couple of the small cylinder head fins missing at the front (anyone got a spare head? ;D) does anyone have any experience of this rare-ish motor?

 I have two of the older Red Head McCoy 40's, but I have never run mufflers on them. They are very good stunt engines though. They really like an APC 12-6 prop cut to 11". Some heat treat the pistons with a torch which also grows the piston a little. That is supposed to make them more resistant to the extra heat from the muffler. I believe Tom Lay does this to them. Sorry, I do not know if the "bolt" engines have better pistons in them or not.

I use a McCoy 40 Lightening Bolt in my 35 Stuntwagon. I also use an muffler that I make for McCoy's. I have excellent runs. Lots of fun!

HI Neville,

The 40 you got from me was heat treated by Tom Lay for muffler usage. ;D  have you run it yet?

Never have seen the OS 49..........  :o  :-[  :(

Hello Bill hope you are well, I couldn't help buying this McCoy as it looked new and was very cheap! I shall use the one you sent me, just deciding what to put it in! I have an old spinnerflo silencer that fits it. The OS 49 was fairly rare, its from '62, I think it was dropped in favour of the 50! Have you run the Merco yet?

  Never seen or heard of the OS 49, but I do run the McCoy lightening bolt 40. I have two and they are very much better than the McCoy 35 (even a good one!). I too was bothered by silencer use. In fact I chickened out! Eventually I made a new piston for one and used a modified Merco silencer! It worked thank goodness!

The OS 49 came in a series of 3 engines. 1 49, 1 50 and a 58. All look pretty much the same. None of them were a real power house but give a decent stunt run when a proper sized venturi is used. All of them have a drip of fuel out the front bearing. Frank Bowman used to make a brass? or bronze? bushing to replace the front ball bearing that cured the drip. (That sounds almost wrong!) I have a 49 on a Viking and it pulls it just fine.

Hello Bill, what size venturi are you using? the 49 I have has an R/C carb on it at the moment. Any idea were you can get parts for this engine?

Neville, I have a venturi from a ENYA 40 6002 in mine. As to parts, good luck. EBAY is about as good a source as any.

Yes I make Mufflers and Venturis.

The OS-49...I just re-bushed one. I also Hemi a head for one. I test ran the engine with good results and sent it back to my customer. It's now in a Wildman.

Scott, how much are the McCoy silencers? I live in England. Can you post a picture on here? What bushings did you replace on the OS?

Hi Neville,

I haven't had a chance to run the Merco yet.  :'(  It just looks so nice!

I got plans for Ken Taylor's 1956 Centuar which has an upright, exposed engine.  Perfect for the Merco 35 RH!
