Title: Chinese ST G-51
Post by: Ron Cribbs on June 23, 2015, 11:47:13 AM
Gents,

My neighbor had one of these laying around. I offered to buy it from him and I am unsure if it will even work for CL purposes as it's the RC version.

I have read conflicting info about this engine as it pertains to CL stunt. Some saying it was good and others saying not.

I am looking for a definitive answer here so I can make the guy a reasonable offer if it's worth it.

Both will work. Both can be reworked by guys like Randy Smith. The C/L version seems happy with 11 - 11.5 diameter props, while the r/c will turn 11.5 - 12 props (not taking into account the weight, area, and drag of what plane it's in). I have both stock and reworked versions of both, they all preform fine, just differently. Cost/value is of course based on condition.  Conversion from r/c to c/l is easy,  Randy and others have both needle valve assemblies and venturies on hand. If you should get lucky and find that your neighbor's engine has some vobro-peened numbers or initials on the case or mounting lugs, then it has been reworked already and would be worth more than a stock one. Good luck.

Ron, one more thing, the numbers that are stamped on the side of a mounting lug are from the factory.  Not to be confused with hand scribed markings of reworkers---.

Thanks for the info Tom. I guess I will give it a whirl.

The engine in question is just a box stock ST, no special numbers apart from the factory serial number.

I recommend NOT starting it before you send it to Randy or Frank Bowman (if he is still doing engines) - I had two Chinese versions that were misassembled at the factory (missing wrist pin clip, etc.) that would have self destructed the engines in short order. I love mine. Plenty of power and very user friendly. If you do get it, send it in to get checked.
P.S.  I also have two T&L .51's that run superb also

My Italian one does not run worth a fig and I have tried every trick in the book and that means just about every suggestion on this forum and elsewhere! Seems that some run fine and others are a pain. Just saying this as the flip side!

Andrew.

I have two 51's and one would not run  well no mater what I did to it. I tour it down and it had a cracked ring which broke as I removed it. I ordered rings from Frank and rebuilt both motors ,now both motors run great. One was a Chinese and one is Italian model. When I had them down they were identical in every way. Frank told me to measure the pistons as he has seen some variances in them. Both of mine used the same size ring.

Hi Ron,

I would offer up to $50 for a used one, then send it to Randy Smith.  It will be a much better engine than a stock one.  Plus he will add the venturi and NVA.  Run the prop, plug and fuel he recommends!

Don't forget that there are two piston and liner sets—one for the RC engine, the other for the CL engine.

If bought cheap enough, one could contact Brian Gardner for an ABC conversion and have a really trouble-free G.51. We really don't know how much those ABC setups will be, yet.   y1 Steve
