Evolution Alpha
« on: June 25, 2011, 04:43:56 PM »
Some one gave me a Evolution Alpha.  It is the engine that comes on a trainer and has a flywheel and pre set carburetor.  As best as I can tell it is a .45 with ABC cylinder.  It was stored in a garage for 2 years.  The carb throttle barrel and the piston are frozen in place.  The carb is wide open and the piston is at bottom (exhaust port open).  I have soaked it in 10% fuel for 24 hores but it still won't budge.  What is the best way to free the guy up?

Fuel is the best solvent to dissolve old sticky oil residue, but sometimes heat also helps. Dump all the raw fuel out of the engine to reduce the fire hazard, then warm the engine with a heat gun. Mount a prop to serve as a handle while heating the engine, and occasionally try to wiggle the prop while holding the warm engine in a towel. Unless the bearings are rusted, it should free up eventually. Don't leave the engine sitting with raw fuel in it, or it will rust for sure. Either disassemble the engine and give it a thorough cleaning, or at least go run it to burn out the fuel.

The flywheel prop drive washer can be replaced with a "normal" Evolution drive washer, unless you need the nose weight. Heat will also unstick the carburetor. If you are going to use the RC carb, you can remove the needle valve limiters without fear of arrest by the needle valve police!

Well Bill,

The heat gun worked!  This in fact is practically a brand new engine. I am a little concerned about the ball bearings but they look and fell OK.  If they give trouble they are easy to replace.  Thanks for the help.
