I just won an auction for an OS 46VF in RC form. It looks pretty well used, so I'm wondering if there is any advice on care and feeding of a well used RC VF, to bring it up to fitness for CL stunt purposes...
~ Does the piston/liner need to be in great condition, or just 'good enough'?
~ Are either of the bearings prone to failure with age/use/abuse?
~ What is the recommended venturi/NVA setup?
~ What is a good pipe/manifold combo that is still available these days?
Thanks guys!
Good enough is good enough. If you want, I think Randy still sells an AAC piston/liner, at which point you have the engine that won the 95 NATs.
Both of the bearings should be replaced with new "economy" grade or the cheapest that are sold by Boca. They are a known weak point, although they last respectably well. For ~$25, not worth wasting a lot of time on the topic.
I would suggest starting with a .270 venturi, and have a range from .265 to .280 available. Use and ST or an ST clone NVA.
The header can be obtained from Randy or MACS. I have only used the MACS but Randy has a larger range of rises. It's not at all critical, the only requirement is that it fit properly and NOT LEAK. David and Ted used one of the smaller Eather pipes. In the brief time I ran it I used a Hunt Future Force pipe, which is tiny, and should tell you how long ago that was. I would ask Randy, but one of the smaller 3-chamber pipes is what I would try now.
