Broken head fin

While I was replacing the factory Cylinder head screws with socket head screws I broke off one of the small fins. Am I waisting my time to try and JB weld it back in place ??

  Probably. It's not likely to make any difference in the way it runs, if that is the question.

   I am not sure why you want to replace the screws. if it's a problem with stripping them out, I would replace the screwdriver instead. With the right Japanese screwdriver it fits more securely than a hex driver.

I change out my muffler bolts to socket head because I find access easier, but given how seldom I mess with head bolts I leave them alone.

Brett's right about using the proper screwdriver -- if you use the right driver on a cross-head screw it works like a dream.  Unfortunately, there are approximately one bazillion different cross-head screw "standards", so getting one that fits can be a challenge.

I've had trouble with the phillips type screw and have never had the Proper screw driver. There's always been one screw that causes a problem, I had a socket head set so I used them on the back plate and head. We just got 6" of snow so maybe I'll try and JB weld that fin piece back on and pass the time by watching the glue dry !!!  LL~ . .tough being retired,, y1.  Thanks for the reply's

In my humble opinion, trying to glue the fin back on is just about pointless.  It won't stay on, and you don't need it, so why bother?

I do think that you should check the fit of the screws.  If you broke the head fin installing the new screws, then chances are that the reason it happened is because the heads of the new screws are a bit big, and are not seating on the flat part of the pocket in the head.  If this is the case, then you need to grind the seating surface of the screws down a bit to match -- otherwise it'll just be perpetually loose screws, more broken fins, and possibly a warped head.

I would JB weld it back on. You don't have anything to loose by trying. Just do not clean the head in a crockpot as it will eat the JB weld and the fin may fall off. Just clean it good with lacquer thinner and glue it on.

Tim, I broke the fin taking the old screws out, the screw driver was angled just a hair and caught the fin. Operator error HB~>

BTW I used OS socket Head screws #23313000 for the 35/40 FP

Hi Leester,

How much extra cooling do you think you'd get by gluing the fin back on? It's probably only about 1/4" X 1/16", and I suspect that the JB is going to insulate the part denying any extra cooling anyway.
If you're doing it for aesthetic reasons, I can't see a gob of JB improving the looks.

That looks good mate, if I used so small a gob of JB it would drop off first time I ran it.
