My Stalker "big bore", first report.
« on: April 16, 2007, 09:02:59 PM »
Today, I was able to put some runs on my new Stalker Big Bore, the .81RE. As far as I know, mine is the second one to enter the country.

Earlier, Walter Hicks, who owns the other one, reported on his engine. I'll back him up, mine runs essentially the same way his does.

First the specs. I used FAI fuel, about 18% all synthetic oil. For breakin, I used a 13.25 X 6 pitch prop.

I fueled up with 3 oz's of fuel, and the engine started on the second flip. The engine was dialed up to the point where it was just switching between a 4 stroke and a wet 2. The RPM's were 7500 to 7600. I closed the needle valve to see where it would rev to. It peaked out at about 78-7900. It just didn't want to go any faster.

I made a total of 4 runs. The engine seemed to settle in at about 7500-7600. It appears to run about 2 minutes for each oz of fuel. 6 mins 15 seconds on 3 oz's, 8.5 mins on 4 oz's.

At this point, I will run it next in a plane. It appears to me that the engine is a grunter, prefering to run a big prop, with about 6" pitch.

The sound, though containing a bit of a bark to it, seemed no worse than most 60's I've been around.

Perhaps Walter will pitch in with any additional info he might have.

I'm rapidly becoming a big bore freak.

whoops, I had to edit this because I made a typo on the engine size. I changed it from a .61 to the correct .81RE.

John,

I can't wait to see Alan Resinger's Stalker .66RE that he put in his latest Firecracker. Should be interesting.

I will have the modified Top Flite Score  "Sorta Cobra "  finished this week and will be using the Stalker .66 RE.

and the .61 Long Stroke to compare the two. I just purchased a Stalker .40 RE used . I love the Stalkers!!!!

I did have a few flights on the ARF Strega using the Stalker .66 RE  Gator  14x4 two blade prop

re pitched to   14x6. No problem hauling the big Strega!!   Walter Hicks

I recieved my Stalker 66RE a while back but have no runs on it yet. It should be a real nice motor, Kaz says he likes it even better than the 61 which Im sure runs excelent. The 66 appears to have a real long stroke as it is about 1/4 to 1/2 in taller. Cant wait!

Walter, Randy, and others.

First I made a typo. I was describing the .81, but I typed .61. Walt is the only other person that I know of that has one, and he reported a little on it when he was breaking it in. Mine seems to be performing the same as his.

I had one of the long stroke .61's, but a friend wound up buying it from me. He reports that it's ow his favorite engine, and wants to get the .76 when they become available.  I'm trying to decide what to order to replace it, so I'm interested in the performance of the .66. I'll be looking for Waloter's evaluation after comparing the 2.

Yep, I like the Stalkers too. I'm getting ready to order a few more.

Alan,

You really need to start building ugly airplanes. You're giving me a complex.

Alan, the Firecracker you've built is gorgeous. You're gonna' give us all a complex.

I know you've also been running Stalkers in the past, my question is how do they comparfe to the .66?  I'm trying to decide on what to order next, the .61 LS, or the .66.

John,
A couple of years ago I built a Classic "Gypsy" and started with a Stalker 46RE.  Had all kinds of problems getting it to run in the airplane the way I wanted it to.  Finally pulled it out and traded it for a Randy Smith tuned Super Tiger 46.  The guy I traded it to has dead perfect runs with it now.  The Stalker 66 is a 1mm bore out of the 61LS engine.  It was developed at the request of Brian Eather.  He wanted to get it bored out 2mm but there wasn't enough material in the sleeve.  Brian and I have talked a lot about designs and engines and he is the one that talked me into the 66.  It is actually run a bit differently than the other Stalkers as Brian suggests 20% nitro with 1 head gasket.  I also have some special props that he made me, that are 12.6 X 5+ 3B and are very slightly undercambered.  I'm really looking forward to getting the new ship in the air but have to wait a couple of weeks as I have to make a trip to Atlanta this week.

Randy,
If you get down, check out the new plans I did for Don.  Pat did a couple of sets so Don could check them before we finalize them for publication.  A new "Classic".
