Title: Brodak 40 break in ?

Hi

I'm trying to break-in my Brodak 40 with little success .
The problem is trying to get the Godforsaken thing to start !
I have the engine in a test stand (upright) and with the tank (Brodak BH 489), mounted in a "V" block, with the fuel pick-up in line with the spray bar .
I'm using PowerMaster fuel (10% nitro , 18% oil) . I also added 1/2 ounce of castor to an 8 ounce container of fuel (just in case oil content was a bit low
I'm not sure what kind of lube the fuel contains , as it does not specify on the container. The plug I'm using is a McCoy MC-55 Hot .
After several attempts , trying to start with a chicken stick , I succeded in one run of about 20 seconds . After that , it would not start again .
Setting the needle at 4 turns (as instructions indicate ) seems to be a bit lean .
I tried opening up to 5-1/2 turns and got "bathed" with fuel shooting out of the venturi  !!
I'm going to try and lower the tank a bit , maybe that will help ?
I'm almost ready to try an electric starter n1
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Rob: They flood real easy so don't go with the electric starter, if there's to much fuel in the engine you could bend a rod ( ask me how I know this) Prime it once and flip through several times, try starting it by back flipping. Don't worry about it starting lean. you only run it a minute or so then shut it off. It needs to get up to temp and then run very little then cool and do again. You should run 10% nitro with 11% castor and 11% syn. If you flood it or I should say when you flood it make sure you get the excess fuel out before trying to restart, and blow out the plug to dry off. They are a pain at first but it pays off afterwards. Keep us posted.

If you are use to Super Tigres you probably have the needle out too far. Loosen the lock nut till you can turn it by hand then screw the needle in until it stops. On My first B 40 what I thought was the needle bottiming out was just a tight place in the threads. It wouldn't run simply because it was way too rich.

They do flood easily, follow the advise already given but be sure you are actually all the way in with the needle, it goes in quite a bit further than a ST.

Also a backward bump is the trick to getting a new engine started. They remind me of the old Enya's, that first tank can be a bitch but after that it's pretty easy sailing.

If you have a wedge tank mounted with the "V" part down and level with the spraybar, my guess is your tank is too high.  You'll want the fuel pickup about 3/4" below the spraybar so that the center of the tank is slightly lower or even with the spraybar.

And, as per instructions, run it in short 1-2 minute bursts with a thorough cooldown period before the next run.  I usually go down 1" in prop diameter for breakin as well.
