Brodak's "Universal" engine mount

     Hello:

     A friend of mine purchased a Brodak kit and it had a universal engine mount included.

     This mount looks like it clamps the engine lugs to the plane's engine mounts  The mount is secured to the mounts via two screws that pass through the engine bearers and are secured with a blind nut.  This would making swapping engines very easy.  It looks like a great idea but at $27.00 it appers to be vastly overpriced.
Perhaps vibration would cause the engine to become loose.

    Has anybody used one of these and if so, what are your opinions?

The U.M. has been working very well in my Pathfinder since 2006. That allow me to change engines easily. So far I have tested all these engines Enya 45 6001 OS 46LA OS 35FP OS 40FP ST G51 Enya SS50 Enya SS40 Enya 40XZ and also Saito 40 that vibrates quite a bit more then 2S engines but the U.M. worked just fine.

I used similar homemade clamps back in the 90s on speed limit foamies, they worked just fine. Never came loose or offered any trouble at all. I was using them with aluminum motor mounts, not maple, so your results may vary.

Hi Frank, I'm glad Martin has had good luck because I was advised by club members much more versed than me to stay away from this mount. Too much chance of engine shifting in the bars and crushing  of the wood. Now with alum. mounts I can see better results.  Wait for more replies, they might be fine but I wasn't going to chance it.

I gotta wonder how good the aluminum is, what grade, etc. The ones in the early ARFs were reported to bend easily and permanently. Changing it out for some good chit fixed that problem. I would question the ARF/ARC parts, but expect the Brodak hardware to be ok. I'm still not sure I'd use it. The "New Mexico" engine plate scheme of Larry Cunningham was positively brilliant.  y1 Steve

I might want to try something like this in the future.  However, I will make my own, rather than spending $27 for a couple pieces of metal and 4 screws.

(later).  I've decided to abandon the idea.  It is often required to remove and replace an engine.  Unless the mounting is "keyed" somehow, the engine cannot go back exactly.  Trim problems could result.

This mount was developed by Windy U. He used it on several ships and it worked very well. Windy used aluminum pads on his mounts with this clamp mount. Just check the tightness every couple of flying secession.

I couldn't tell from the picture exactly what I was looking at. Is this something that would work on a profile? I'm thinking of changing the Shoestring from a Thunder Tiger Pro 25 to an fp25. I think they're different. I'm not wild about drilling, plugging and re-drilling on the old girl.

Yes it works in any model. The Pathfinder ARF is a Profile and this come with it from Brodak.
