Break In Brodak .049 MK II
« on: October 28, 2007, 08:43:22 AM »
I have some questions with regards to the Brodak MK II. Also I saw that Bob Z had it mounted sideways on a Baby Clown. So here are my questions.
1. Why the sideways mount?
2. What size or part number on the tank that will work on a Baby Clown?
3. How long will it run on that size tank?
4. How much bench time before it is broken-in?

Thanks,
Frederick

First off have you read the instructions that came with the engine??   As far as the side mount on profile fuselage is it lines the tank up better.    Have fun,  DOC Holliday

I am guessing the sidewards mount is because it has beam mounts, and this is rather traditional on profile planes. It also adds a little weight to the outboard side, so you could in principle decrease the wingtip weight a little.

A vertical mount in a 1/2 A model is mainly due to the Cox tank mount, and the Brodak 1/2A'S were originally designed for that engine.

Frederick: When I wrote the instructions for the .049 MK II, I intended fro you to be able to get the engine to where it would give you good reliable runs, even though not fully broken in. You might need as much as an hour before all is well.

I was surprised and pleased at the quality of the fits. The TDC pinch was such that it should yield a good long life, but more run-in time may be required.

We went to beam mounts since this is what most of the customers preferred. Besides, I'm not sure that there are any more radial mount .049s being made. Should you have one and want a good stunt/fun plane, the original Baby Clown may still be available for radial mounting.

When I evaluated the prototype on the Baby Clown, I used a 1/2 ounce Perfect wedge tank, which provided sufficient flying time - I was able to do most of the ama stunt pattern.
The flying time will increase as the engine gets properly run in - PLEASE BE PATIENT!!!

If you or anyone has any issues or questions regarding the Brodak .049s (I and II), feel free to contact me and I will try and help. <rzambelli@moog.com>
