Title: BlueMax powered by a 45, what a nice surprise
Post by: Martin Quartim on December 11, 2017, 07:43:18 AM
Tried an Enya SS45BB in a BlueMax to see how much performance I could get out of it and the engine performed surprisingly well.

Stock Engine with Enya optional Spiral 8.3mm venturi
Stock Original Muffler
Stock APC 12x4 prop
Stock Byron 10/20
Stock Brodak MW ATF 4.5Oz tank
Stock Hobbyco Large Exhaust Deflector

Got 5.6s Laps and it burned 3.4Oz

The Spiral Venturi seems to works better than the regular venturi, the engine run feels more symmetric and precise.

Here is a video of day 2 of testing. It ran too strong, this setup is probably better for me to use in very windy condition. I used the 8.3mm Spiral venturi and a cut down hobbyco large deflector, cut right after the bent and used the full length of the straight part.

To tame down the engine a bit I just used a full large deflector.

with mild winds

with light winds

Hi Martin.

Nice Combo, The SS45 seems to perform excellent with that full size ship. Congrats!!!!

Manuel.

I have played with SS-45 with mixed results. I'm curious what RPM you are launching at?

On the  Enya  45 SS   I  think the  lapped version is the  best one,  I still have a couple left, very strong long lasting stunt motor

not sure, never measured. My tach needs a new battery, but  I guess around 10500rpm.

I set the needle right before it gets in 2 cycles.

I like to use APC or 3Blades Carbon Fiber props with low pitch with my Enya Schnuerle engines and get very good results with or without a pipe.

Schenuerle Enya engines have a unique port timings and work a bit differently from other engines.

Manuel.

Thank you Manuel.  Here in Brazil fuel is very very expensive so I am quite happy I got this engine to help me save some money and still have a decent performance.

It has been very hot here, in the last video, the Density Altitude  was 4770ft  VD~

Thank you for the info. That set-up is the one I eventually got around to using. At first I was trying for a 4x2x4 run and it was too rich, would "blubber" (extended burp) during the maneuvers. When I leaned it out to a wet 2 stroke it came into its own. Very consistent with tons of power, in fact too much for the plane it was mounted in. This could be corrected with more experimentation but as that plane it is a beater test mule it was not worth the effort. Run this way I'd say it is a good choice for a plane 620-650" sq or even larger (ie: Blue Max) but don't try to run it like a ST-46 (as I did originally).  8)

Not really engine related, I just wanted to say : I really enjoy when you post videos Martin. Watching you fly is awesome.

Yes, exactly, a Schenuerle Engine will not work well with the same set-up of an Old Cross Flow engine.

You can tune in the SS45 to run in a decent 4-2-4, not with a 6/7 pitch prop, but with a 3.5~4.0 pitch prop.
