Best Super Tigre 60 Fuel?
« on: July 14, 2024, 06:21:26 PM »
What's good fuel for the Super Tigre small case 60? It's ball bearing and ringed, so I'd think it doesn't fall into the Fox 35 "high oil" class.  Yet I don't think 17% or 18% synthetic is right, either.  Got a decent run on my standard 5% nitro, 16% synthetic, 4% castor, but wonder if just a little more castor would be good, like 16/6 synthetic/castor.

Thoughts?

thanks,

Peter

Here's what Randy recommended:

"For S.T. .46 51, and .60s and most all ball bearings Stunt motors, a 23% half blend works best. Again, the Synthetic blend will help keep the engine clean, and insure long life. If you use all castor in these types, it can stick the ring in the groove, resulting in poor compression and shortened engine life. If you have a ringed engine that castor has gummed up badly, most times running the synthetic blend will free the stuck ring, and the engine will return compression and power for you."

You can read more about other applications on his pinned thread on fuels at the top of the engine section.

For Tiger ringed engines like the old small case .60s, or even the newer G-.51s, I use  5% OR 10% nitro or something in between, and oil needs to be in the 20% to 22% total oil range with at least half castor. This is mostly to lubricate the ring (s) and the bearings. Some purists will insist on 22 to 25% ALL castor with nitro in the same range. In my G-51s, I would mix SIG 10% Champion 50/50 oil mix, and mix that half and half with SIG 10" nitro with 20% all castor at a 50/50 mix. This kept a bit of synthetic (Klotz) in the mix to help keep things clean and still had a good volume of castor for everything else. I was using these engines in a couple of models, and this was back in my heavy flying days and they all had untold numbers of hours on the and at least two of the engines still have the original ring in them. That is what the castor is for, the rings. Search out "Tom Lay Break In Instructions" here on the engine forum for further information. I think it has been posted many times and shows what he recommended.

My Tom Lay G.51 took quite awhile to seat the ring. I flew it awhile with not enough seal to hand start. Suddenly it had good compression, after I'd about given up on it. Like a light switch. Still seems strange that it would be so sudden. I don't have a lot of experience with ringed model engines. I'd run 10-22, partly because 5-22 isn't likely to be available. The R/C bods want 10% to keep their glowplug hot for idle, and also because that's what the LHS would recommend as it costs more and more profit.  H^^ Steve

Had excellent result with 5/11/11 today in a Legacy an NVCL member is flying.  The ST 60 is swinging a Rev-Up 12-5 and lighting via a K&B 1L.  65'3" eye-eye for 68'10" handle to centerline.
