Best or Good Engine 25

Gentlemen,

I am considering in building a P-40 Warhawk that requires a .25 cu in engine.

Which manufacture and model number is considered a good .25 cubic inch engine that has the following characteristics:
             light weight
             steady running
             effective muffler
             light muffler
             reasonable economical

Smoke'em if you Gott'em
Drink'em if you Brought'em.

The OS .25LA is still available (I think) from Tower Hobbies. It meets all your criteria. Likewise the Enya .25 SS is available from Randy Smith. It's a stronger engine, but a bit heavier (and a few $$ more); and will last forever if properly broken in.

I'll second the OS .25LA. Meets most of the criteria on your list, although the muffler isn't really all that light. The Brodak .25 would come in second but has a price tag about $30 more than the OS.

The Enya SS30 has the same case as the Enya SS25 and it is lighter. Mine runs pretty constant with an APC 10.5x.4.5 with a RingMaster.

And there is the "Enya SS25 AL Chro S Pro" AAC with aluminum piston and chromed aluminum liner which is lighter then the SS30 and SS25. This is probably the strongest .25 engine on the market and it comes with a high precision NVA.

The Brodak 25 would be high on my list to consider. The muffler is light enough, so that tends to make the $30 (?) higher price a wash. I like my OS .25LA, but the plane needs the stock muffler and more to balance. I wouldn't recommend the OS unless you were willing to pop for an aluminum backplate (TT GP .25, OS .25FP or Curtiss Shipp's CNC'd ones), a good NV up front (Randy Aero's)...all of which make the darned thing cost more than the Brodak .25.

But FWIW, a club member has a "Black Tiger" P-40 that started out with a Fox .36 angle plug engine...the .25LA worked out a lot better, and flies it well.  y1 Steve

I bought a Brodak 25 once but it had no compression so I traded it for some balsawood. I also bought a Enya 25 that had no compression. I bought new piston and linner for it and now it starts a lot better. I would recomend the OSLA25 as the better of the 3 for someone just getting into this size engine despite what other people have said about them. We have had a lot of beginners here that started with the OS. HB~> HB~>

   Depends on how big a model we are talking about. As you know, all 25's are not alike and "25-sized airplane"s are not alike. I had an OS 25S baffle-piston motor on a Jr. Nobler and it wasn't unreasonable. Put a 25FP or a 25FSR on the same airplane and it's insanely overpowered and would be difficult to control. As far as I am concerned, a "25" could mean anything from a Shark 15 to a Green Box Nobler.

   The choices available right now, new, are fairly limited - either a Brodak 25 or a OS 25LA. I haven't been very impressed with the power of the 25LA compared to either the 20 or 25FP, but it's pretty reliable once you seal up the backplate. I have no experience with the Brodak engine but Bob Reeves says its pretty good. I think both are pretty inexpensive and reasonably light, but you *want* the good muffler on the LA, and it's not outrageously heavy on an appropriately-sized airplane.

Brodak .25. its light, AAC P&L, I believe a much longer life than an OS.  Its not a converted R/C motor.

OS 25 LA. You might need to order a Venturi from Lee's Machine shop if you can't find a CL version!
Brodak 25 is great too, hust a little higher price. OS first choice for friendly operations!
