Back plate Fox 35
« on: September 20, 2022, 04:15:36 PM »
There are some after market backplate gaskets on the net for the fox 35 but they are not cork and they are just round they don’t extend beneath the backplate screws , will they be ok? I noticed on some engines they have been used but it bends the plate at the screw holes. If I find some that do cover entire back plate will it bend the ones back straight again and make a goo seal ?   These aren’t cork but will they work and have to find out if they are still in business

The late, great Marvin Denny, known as "Bigiron" here on the forum, was pretty darn good with Fox engines and he introduced me to the use of playing cards for back plate gaskets. The stock cork gasket is pretty think, and like you mentioned, tend to allow the ears on the back plate to bend. I had a friend of mine, who was a pit boss or supervisor at a local casino get me a few decks of cards that had been taken out of play, which they do regularly, and they use a punch to go all the way through the deck, box and all, to mark them as unusable. I can get two gaskets out of each card. Cut a card in half.  Use a template to cut the big hole, then use the back plate to center and hold the gasket, but turned half way to clear the holes. Use a sharp #11 to poke a hole for the first screw, run the knife around the hole to open it up, then put one screw in. You might need a flat washer so the screw doesn't bottom out. Repeat the process with the other two holes. Remove all screws, locate the back plate as normal and install screws, then trim around the back plate with your sharp #11 blade to remove excess material. Tighten the three screws securely. The first time you run the engine the heat will cause the clear clear coat on the card to soften and act as a sealer. If the ears on your back plate are bent a bit from using the old cork gasket, tightening the screws with new gasket in place will level them back out again. Don't try to bend them with pliers.
  Type at you later,
   Dan McEntee

This take a whole lot longer to type than it does to actually make the gasket!!!

I always lap the back of the case flat using 400 and some oil on a piece of glass. I ensure the entire area is sanded and all pits and casting imperfections are removed. I then glue a piece of 400 over the hole in the engine with 3M 77. I cut out the sand paper leaving just the mated area covered. I then lap the backplate to the case.

You can use the newer gaskets but don't overtighten the ears because they will bend and if straighten, they break.

One,
As stated above the playing cards will work fine, if you want the original FOX cork gasket they are available at MECOA.com, but the ones from RC Laser Cut Gasket Co II the Dave posted (thanks Dave great information) are really good. If you have the Stuffer backplate RC Laser Cut Gasket Co II has gasket sets for it also (the stuffer is a little larger diameter) look down their list on eBay site.

They also have gaskets for lots of other engines.

Best,    DennisT

I meant to post this prior. Bob Zambelli showed me Permatex anaerobic gasket maker. I by the small tube about 2" long, it lasts a long time. The gasket maker works great on the Fox and since the late 90's this is all I ever used. It's service removable and it's not a RTV. It doesn't corrode aluminum and it's suitable for the environment it's being used for. It cures only in the absence of air.
