The LOSER, Engine Choice!
« on: November 27, 2012, 06:55:48 PM »
I decided on the OS LA .40 for The LOSER.

My other engines are to large and my smaller ones are really old.

Plus, if The LOSER comes out heavy I can bolt in the OS LA .46, Same footprint and I already have one.

I'm using a .75" extension with a custom made adapter nut from Dick Pacini. Dick does it right the first time! Made me my adapter so I could use a spinner I already had. The spinner is 2.25" in diameter.

I will be adding a bit of weight by building up the fuselage on each side of the profile. Not sure how much I'll add but the model will look better?

Mounting holes aren't drilled yet, so if I need an extra .75", to make room for a larger tank, I can move the engine forward and eliminate the extension. I'll determine this in the next day or so.

I will draw the formers in CAD.

Marcus,

My only other choice with trimming the mount is my OS LA .46.

I have other engines.

I think the 46 is enough, but of course you can start with the 40 and then set up the plane the way you like.
I happen to like the biggest possible.
This model of your, when finished, is going to be a nice looking one!

The .40 LA-S is not a real friendly engine, tho it can be made to run alright. Just not as easy to get under control as the .46. For the .40LA, an extra head gasket, a Thunder Tiger 11 x 4.5, Randy Aero CNC Tube Muffler, and Powermaster GMA 10-22 fuel is known to work.  The .46 is actually a little lighter. It doesn't look like you'll have room for a 4 oz tank unless you put it on the inboard side, which is ok if you can tolerate the looks. I am not a fan of shaft extensions, even on ball bearing engines.  D>K Steve

There is plenty of vertical height and aren't profile tanks much taller and narrower anyway so as not to get the feed pipe too far outboard?

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

I had no idea the OS LA .40 was difficult to set up? I actually have two of them. Purchased only because I was told they run great.  n~

I thought the LA .46 was a bit to powerful for this small model having only about 462 squares and 49.5" in span.

The tank will be hidden, because I'm building up the fuselage. I can easily get 4 onces in there. With the .46, will I need more than
 4 onces?

I also have from Brodak, nylon wedges for engine offset. My consideration was the 1 degree.

The model has a weight box and adjustible leadouts.

I took Chris' advice and will mount the gear in the wing.

Thanks again,

Charles

Edited, 462 squares.

Charles.  Don't be turned off by comments that OS40LA is hard to set-up.  I don't happen to agree.  I have a couple of them which are just fine.  I have modified mine with a smaller venturi and S.T. needle valve.  I don't use them only because the OS46LA is stronger, lighter, and will drop in the same mounts as the 40.
