Stockings as air filters

Stockings when used as an airfilter, do they have a reasonable lifespan?

They do for me. I run two to three layers on my Red Head McCoy's, as filters and also to restrict the intake for a better run. After a couple of years they get clogged up with dried castor, and I need to change them. Whenever my motor runs start to deteriorate I know it is that time.

I second Jim's observations.  It only seems that they get dirty/clogged after a while.  Nylon stockings will last a long time.

You can do a lot of experimenting with the number of layers which effectively works like changing the venturi size.

I have two issues with the panty hose filters. 1) They are so stretchy, I see no way to get anything like consistent results. The same mesh can vary radically from one install to the next. 2) I had one go wonky on my PA .51, and naturally thought it went down the venturi, because the engine was not free, but kinda lumpy. Turned out that the mesh got down around the drive collet and a little bit stuck into the front bearing. I cannot envision how that is possible. I think I was just belching :## the engine at the time. I haven't belched it since, largely because it doesn't seem to help me get it started any easier. The problem is not getting it wet enough, but I haven't gotten the process down yet.  n~ Steve

This may be a daft question(s), but how do you 'fix' the stocking on to the venturi, and how come the stuff doesn't melt??

Hi Phil,

You use an O ring to hold on the layers.  It doesn't get hot enough on the venturi to melt the material.

I think the more standard fastening of Nylon (panty-hose) is with Nylon "tie-wraps"  You can really crank them down tight!

Hi Floyd,

The ones I have seen (and mine) use O rings so that changes can be made easier than with tie wraps.
