R/C ST51 &TT GP25
« on: March 16, 2008, 07:43:01 AM »
Purchased almost new engines at a swap meet. The St is an older Itailan made version,my question is this: Should I change the liner to the C/L version when I swap the carbs? I'm currently a sport flier, not competing. I assume the timing is different, but as a sport flier will I notice a big difference. My experience level is still low, consider myself fortunate to bring the plane home in one piece. By the way, this engine is destined for Pat King's FS45( if you haven't seen the plans you should check them out).
My other question is in regards to the TT Gp25. I want to change it to a venturi and needle. Should I contact SSW(they are local) or try and order parts thru www.thundertiger4u.com . Has anyone dealt with them in the past? This engine will power one of thevintage combat planes I'm building to test the reflexes of some retired fast combat competitors, I know I'll have to shorten the lines to 52' to get the speeds up, just hoping to give them a taste of the past.

thanks

I think Randy Smith at Aero will be the fastest turnaround for a CL intake and NVA.  I have flown with OS's FP 25s in modern Arrowplane combat models (built by Jeff Dawson), on 60' 018s, and with the large intake, found the speeds to be in the 73-75 mph Speed Limit ranges, and more like 65-70 mph on the small, non-pressure size intakes.  I would imagine that the same type engine would power a small 70s vintage Fast Combat model at 85-90 mph fairly easily with an 8-5 prop.

The GP25 is supposed to be a clone of an FP 25.  Jeff prefers a OS 25 FXes, which power the Arrowplanes he builds to the 90 mph speed range with a mostly wide open intake.  Based on those flights, I feel sure a GP25 with a bladder and the right prop, on 52' lines, would simulate the 100 to 105 mph speeds of the earlier 1970s with the much smaller size planes of that era (these Arrowplanes are about 500 in2).

Sorry I can't assist regarding the ST 51 engine.

Thanks for the info, hopefully the Super Satan, or Voodoo will put some smiles on their faces, might even put that old steely glare back in their eyes. Do you think the GP 25 would be overpropped with a 9x6? I guess I could cut them down if need be.

Thanks again

Steve,

One of my buddies is running the RC version of the ST 51 which Tom Lay has done his magic to.  Not sure what venturi/NVA he is using, but he is able to turn much more prop than my Dixon CL ST 51 will turn.  The RC version liner has different timing than the CL version.

My friend, Ronnie Thompson, has the RC 51 on a kit built Strega and has enough power for most conditions.

Cheers,
Jim

This all presupposes that the GP25s are very closely cloned from the FP 25s, which enjoy revving more than the G21-35s and 36X-BBs used to.  Modern Fast Combat 36s are running with 8-6 props, and the 25 FPs could  be slowed to under 75 mph with 8-4s and fullsize AMA fast foamies, so I'm still suggesting 8-5s, bladders, and fairly unrestricted intakes for the GP25s and more speed than that.

Thanks for the info. Thats what is so great about this forum, there is a wealth of knowledge that is shared, unlike R/C cars where you have to keep setups fairly secret.

thanks again
