Byron Barker Magnum 52 -- Muffler?

I just bought a Byron Barker Magnum 52, intending to put it into the Brodak Legacy that'll be this winter's build.

It came with a tongue muffler, but given the neighbors at my flying field, I'd prefer a quieter engine run.  Is this thing going to work with a conventional muffler, and is there a good one to look for that'll provide noise reduction without too much added weight or problems with the engine run?

Personally, I'd worry about the muffler situation later, and use it to help adjust the CG. Sounds like you didn't get the stock Magnum muffler?

Randy Smith's CNC tube mufflers are my favorite (I've used them on .46LA and ST G.51), but you'll probably want to add a rubber ducky to deflect the goo in some direction or other. The ducky also helps take the edge off the noise production. 

Alternatively, the Scott Dinger mufflers are fabricated & welded, and probably weigh a little less. I've only heard a few of those, and my impression is that they sound kinda "tinney" because of the thin walls. All those reinforcing/cooling ribs and thick walls on the factory mufflers help a lot, IMO.

I did not get the stock Magnum muffler, no.  The engine was NIB from Mark Scarborough, but he bought it NIB from someone else, and somewhere along the line the muffler got gone and there's a tongue muffler in the box instead.

On the CG issue, I may shorten the nose a bit during the build if it seems indicated, if that's what it takes to accommodate the weight of a muffler (someone mentioned that the Magnum 52 is a bit heavy).  We fly in McIver State Park, and they're remodelling the camping area closest to us, which means more campers, which means the potential for more noise complaints.  I don't want to be the guy who gets us kicked out, so I'm muffling it to RC standards, not CL.

I suppose I could build my own muffler...

The Randy Smith mufflers are great,, fairly light,, and the sound is good,, the Avenger has one on it,,

I may have a Magnum 53 muffler,, its possible it would work,, I will scrounge around,,

I'm seeing a 37mm bolt spacing on the Magnum 52, which is about 1.5mm wider than an OS 46LA muffler.

I will get my calculater out and translate that to real numbers, then check to see what I have here,, the port size can be tweaked so thats not as much of a concern,,

you can shave some weight on that engine by turning the head down to match the case as well,,

If the spacing is 1.45 inches, same as an OS 46 SF   I still have some of my ultralight  tube mufflers, They should be a fit
