Title: 1952 Fox .29 Stunt likes to run backwards
Post by: David Ruff on February 26, 2018, 03:19:44 PM
Was this common with these engines?
Been doing bench break in and today it decided it likes to run backward.
I get her running ok, but it is odd??

Dave,
When you say it likes to run backward is running at full rpm or just half running? If it is running at full rpm then it might have a reverse crankshaft that would allow it to run clockwise. Fox made this type of crank for the 35 & 29 (I have one). Look down the venture and see what side opens as it come up on compression. If you have a reverse crank use a pusher prop (Zinger make wood one). Let us know what you find.

No. It just runs at low speed until I pull the fuel line.  I get it running ok. It runs great when it decides to tun the right direction.

I bet it's flooding.  Instead of choking try priming in the exhaust port.

Very possible.  I will try that.

I was gonna say the same thing Russ said. Too wet on start up. Also, in my limited experience, the 29 likes a 9 inch prop.
I choke flip mine 3 times and clear it out with 6 flips. Hook up the battery and one sharp back flip.

Right, Top Flite 9-6 regular blade or Y&O or "Bull" BY&O 9-6.

When it is running backwards, pinch the fuel line or restrict the air inlet to the tank, it should slow down and almost stop. If you let go at just the right time, right as it seems to stop, it will start up forward.

This is pretty common with upright mounts, if you get enough fuel in the crankcase to get it to pop, it's too much to keep running.

when you flip it, make sure you flip it very fast and quick as you can  8 to 10 times, this will arerate the charge, make sure  you do not flood it, if its  flooded turn it sideways and inverted while flipping  to clear the flood
If it is  OIL flooded  then put a squirt of  lighter fluid in it, and  repeat

Thanks for the tips.  On the bench, it is upright.  I do tend to flood it.  It will not be upright on the model.

I had an early 1960's McCoy .35 that did that.  Had to bump it backwards so it would run forward and I have the scars to prove it!. A shielded RC plug helped.
