Thunder Tiger .40 questions
« on: May 19, 2012, 11:19:30 PM »
Can anyone tell me if this would be a good stunt engine? I've tried to research Thunder Tigers, and have seen some comments about the venturi being wrong, or something like that...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/THUNDER-TIGER-40-CONTROL-LINE-MOTOR-with-MUFFLER-/300712387751?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4603dae4a7

Just curious as to how much work would have to be put into one like this, if anything...

It's a bit confusing, but for the GP range, Thunder Tiger and Magnum are the same. Same factory, same innards, different logo on the side of the crankcase.

It is a different story now.

If you have a CL TT engine, yes, the venturi is too big. The venturi from the GP 25 is in the ball park for the GP 40.

If you have the CL motor with a normal NVA, Scott Riese, Randy Smith and Len Neumann can all supply venturis in the correct sizes. There are probably others but these are the people I've dealt with.

If you have a radio engine with a carb, the hole for the pinch bolt is 4mm dia and you can use a Super Tigre NVA. The ST NVA comes in different lengths and it is a good idea to have the hole in the spraybar on the centreline of the crankcase. The obove-mentioned suppliers should be able to advise on the exact NVA that is required.

Allen, if you are thinking of buying this motor,, you maybe better served to find an LA 46, lots of info on them, and they are great for stunt,, and available for about the same money as the TT you showed a link for

Thanks for the replies.

Mark,

I was thinking that the LA 46 would be the better choice.

Allen,
have you connected with the local fliers yet? It says you are in Spanaway,, the LA is used to very good effect around these parts..

Mark,

Yes, Steve Helmick hooked me up with a SkyRay, and I've flown it once up at Auburn. I bought an LA 25 for it.

I just have to start flying more (weather permitting, of course), and learning! I try to listen to Steve, Pete Peterson and Randy Powell as much as possible when I'm up there, too. Only been twice, but that will change this year!

Thanks!

A Thunder Tiger GP 42 makes an excellent stunt engine with a venturi from Len Neuman. I prefer them to an LA 46. However the LA 46 is a kind of de facto standard "cheap" stunt engine and the info for them is thick on the ground. I still prefer the GP42 though!

Regards,

Andrew.

"  Weight is 8.6 ounces.  Power is rated at 1.1hp@15,000rpm. "  That kinda says it all.  This motor is timed for rpm, not low end torque.

And the very accepted LA 46 is quoted at weight 9.29oz, power 1.18 @ 15,000.

Very similar figures taking into account the capacity difference so what does this say about the Thunder Tiger 40?

Going purely on stats there is no reason to doubt it. :)
