$5 worth on Ebay
« on: January 26, 2011, 01:30:51 PM »
Hello all,
Fasciated to see a Thunder Tiger 20 (plus an OS pet) for sale on Ebay. Bid tongue in check and won at $5. I was interested in the Thunder Tiger, with visions of an FP 20 Clone, no such luck this was a clone of the earlier OS Max. Both engines were seized solid, but yielded to the usual heat treatment and a little lubrication. The TT20 was in good shape. The OS Pet was in near new condition, but missing the NVA. Does anyone know what current NVA will fit? The fixing hole in the venturi is .125" or fractionally larger than 3 mm? Any suggestions gratefully recieved! Got a new Tru Flite 10x8 in with the deal, sometimes Ebay works!

Regards,

Andrew.

I've got one of those Thunder Tiger 20's and a 25 too. They make absolutely ZERO power.

Ahdrew, years ago, I used to graze my knuckles trying the adjust the original Pet needle because it was short and small. I replaced it with the NVA from the Max 15.

The FP 15 may fit if you can find one.

Ah Well, at least the Pet and new prop are worth the $5! As to the TT20 well you can't win them all!

I wonder if a Fox 15 NVA would work.  I had a Pet back in the 1960's.  It did not start well but ran fine.  I've scored several nice engines off eBay in the last year at reasonable prices.

Thanks Jim,
I should have a Fox NVA around somewhere. Now I have some incentive to try and find it!

Thanks,

Andrew.

FWIW, I have an OS Pet NV Assy. I think it's pretty close to new, but I did try it in NW Sport Race (Fox .35 Stunt) to see if the Fox would pull fuel with a smaller spraybar. It didn't. I'm not sure which version of the Pet it fits, but probably the #1. If you want it, it's yours for the shipping.  H^^ Steve

Hi Bill,
Will take your advice on the TT20 and give it a run. I have not done so far, because of the dreadful gales that are blowing. I will let you know if I have a good one!
Just saw your post on the Enya 61 RE. I just do not have much luck with ringed engines, by the time I have run them in they are worn out. Or to put it another way, when I really want the engine to perform, it always has a fit of ring temper! I love my old Merco 61s don't get me wrong, but ABC is infinitely better than ringed anyday. Never had an ABC engine let me down like I have with ringed engines. Just my lopsided take on the matter!

Regards,

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

I can understand that.  I have found a lot of improvement in the situation by using Frank Bowman's rings, though.  Much better than almost all the factory rings I have used.  I am not in danger of wearing out too many engines, though!

I have yet to be able to use my ST .46 which I converted with a Brian Gardner ABC (AAC?) piston/sleeve/head.  My friend, Ed Ruane, helped in the development of the assemblies and gives them excellent reports.  I feel I will never wear it out through normal use. ;D

Hi Bill,
All I can say is lucky you! I did try to get the Bristunt ABC piston liner setup for the ST60. But I was too late and I cannot see any more being made now. Think I missed out bigtime there. When I get anymore ring trouble, Frank Bowman will be getting the Piston / liner in the post in a twinkling of an eye! I never had much luck with the manufacturers rings. Tried making them myself, but had to make a few before I got a good one! Still I did learn a lot from that...........basically I am a lousy machinist!

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

I was also lucky enough to get the OS .35S set up.  I put one of Leonard's rods in the OS, also, along with allen head screws.  I figured I could get those and I would wear out the planes before I ever wore out the engines! LOL!!

Hi Bill,
Had a chance to run the TT20, it isn't too bad at all, roughly 350 rpm down on my good FP20s with the APC 9x4. Used the same venturi diameter as the FP20 plus the standard OS NVA.
Think you must have got the Duds Clint, still its about time I had a winner on the Ebay lottery! Now what the devil do I do with it? Think I will gift to some youngsters in the village!

Regards,

Andrew.
