Riley Wooten PIRATE design flaw from 1955.....
« on: December 31, 2010, 12:08:27 PM »
Seems kind of dead here.........so..............a question:

Did anyone here ever build a Riley Wooten PIRATE (June, 1955 Flying Models) and not have trouble with the inside wing bucking where the main spar (1/8 x 7/8 x 36) was relieved of some wood to allow movement of the belcrank?  I did in 1955 and so did a flying buddy.  We both used K&B .35 greenheads for power and both planes had the inside wing fold at the belcrank, after a few flights where tight maneuvers were performed. I know Riley used the Fox .35 stunt (less powerful) in his versions, but It seems that there was a design flaw that was overlooked and was included in the published article/plans.  I am betting that someone out there has had the same experience..........TDurrill    y1   #^    H^^

I think Riley just put a little carbon fiber in that spot on the original.
