Title: Top Flite Combat Cats
Post by: Richard Fleming on March 18, 2011, 06:45:46 PM
I built and flew Combat Kittens back in the seventies but not the Combat Cats. Who designed them and did it ever win any major contests? Thanks! HB~>

I don't remember who designed them.  Still have one in the box.  Built one years ago when they first came out.  Too much construction for competition but to me were great flying planes.  Had to go to Fox  as the cranks in the K&B engine that just came out, I think series 60 or 61 kept throwing the shafts.  They were also big compared to a VooDoo or Big Iron.

I built about 14 of 'em.  They were a great kit combat plane, provided you put the engine on the centerline, not elevated like in the kit.  It was a Top Flite product, but I don't recall any mention of the designer.  I always figured it was an in-house knockoff for the Flite Streak.

Lots of other designs, like the VooDoo were undersize with the G21/35 and the wing area of the Combat Cat came in handy.

Combat Kittens and the Combat Cats were kitted by Top Flite.

I remember that somebody downloaded and cleaned up the scan that I posted, but I can't reall who.

If you download my scan, print it, and cover with Fascal it would work good enough,

A friend of mine won Senior at the NATS with a couple of them.  I think it took 4 rounds.  They flew just fine with the raised thrustline. The raised thrustline  would need a patch to the leading edge, since they were notched out of the box.  The notch did make for a weak point.

Paul, That is a cool looking decal design. Thank you for sharing that one! Guess I am going to have to build me another Voodoo and Combat Cat.
