Title: Super Satan version 19!
Post by: Tom Luciano on April 19, 2021, 07:12:24 AM
Hi gang!
I posted this on the MACA facebook page as well. facebook is so fleeting that it's gone in a New York minute.
I had purchased a Nelson when Henry did the last run in the hopes to fly fast someday. Well when you start flying Combat in your mid 50's it takes awhile(maybe never) to learn. Anyway, I wantef to do a play on my all time favorite the Super Satan. So, I set out to design a plane that was more modern but kept the overall look and design characteristics of the original version 12 that was featured in the magazine. Version 1 to Larry's recollection was designed it late 64. I have a straight wing version 3 that is dated February '65. Anyway, my basic thought was, if Larry designed it today!
I showed the plane to Larry yesterday and he was extremely excited to see it. I had coined it version 2021. He said no thats version 19 as he had made 18 previous versions. I'm pleased and grateful that Larry was so excited.

This was a really gratifying project. Also, Larry didnt miss not one little detail I did to make it appear like the original.

Oh, he didnt like seeing the tip weight box!!! Lol

Hi John,
Unfortunately,  Larry hasn't  flown in a few years. He's been battling vertigo.  All his planes are in the car ready for when he is!

Any measurements, areas. boom length, etc. i.e.-  is it an exact scale up or did you make it a knock off?

Hi Phil,
Funny you should ask! It's just a play with as if Larry built it in todays world. So, no its not scaled up as I thought the wing would be too thin. So, instead, I (eh et hm) borrowed  your root and tip ribs. Span is 48" without tips which is 33% larger than Larry's. Stab reflects that and Booms were basically cut to get the balance right and a little TLAR was involved. I'll have to check my drawing on Stab area. Ill bring it up to Gill's meet in a couple of weeks!

PS bring bladder material!!!

Maiden flight was a huge success. Besides a handle adjustment the first fly was uneventfull. No trimming is needed! Also, it didnt fold!! Tracks really well and has a great turn. Thanks to Al Ferraro and Jim Vigani for getting me in the air.

And they say 1/2A is too fast? I got dizzy trying to count 1-Mississippi, 2-Mississ....shoot, start over 1-Mississippi, 2-Miss...darn, start over again!

I was shocked to see just how much pull the plane exherted against you (I fly small).
Congrats on a fine flying machine.

Tom, what prop are you running. How many runs are on the engine currently? I really wish Shawn and I could've made it. We had some monsoon of storms roll through there at times. Glad to see you were able to fly it.

Hey Ken,
Al gave me a 7.8x6 APC. That is the first run on the engine besides a 1 minute run prior to letting it go.

Hi Jim,
Thank you! Its a great flyer. I'll work on my flying and then start tipping the Nitro bottle!

That would be the same prop I use myself however I have some glass props from the Texans. A truly amazing engine that N36.

Come see Tom ring out his New Nelson powered Super Satan at the Vintage Combat Festival, Middlesex New Jersey, Mountain View Park this Sunday 9-19-21. It will be a BLAST.

Another FYI for anyone interested.  I use my own fiberglass copy of the APC 7.8 x 6 on my Nelson 36 combat ships, and are available for sale.   As MM sez, prop failure can instantly destroy plane.

Mike, there are two decidedly different 7.8x6 APC props. Can you post a picture of yours for identification?

Not so good at doing pictures, but it is molded off of the version labeled "D 1" on the hub.

The 8x6 sport is definitely different.  (I have a mold for that one too)  zz

My understanding is there is/was an older discontinued 7.8X6, this has a thinner hub and wider blades.
The current version has a thicker hub and thinner blades.
Both were labeled D-1 on the hub.

That was helpful.  My repro is the thicker hub with the narrow blades.   Seems odd they would have put the same designation on two different products.

The old style 7.8x6 is a great performing prop.

Al and I got some fast glass props from Vasyl that I meant to try this past Sunday but forgot. We have a speed limit meet on the 10th, I'll bring the Nelson Satan and check the performance.

I am also a big fan of the old style 7.8x6. As expensive as the APC carbon version was, it is still a great prop for super slow rat. I also won AMA 36 slow rat at the NATS with one of the gray props on a Nelson ST X36 conversion, beating all the Nelson 36's and composite props.

Hello

Wondering if Tom got a chance to time his new Nelson powered Super Satan, Is there going to be a new record that beats Al's 129mph?
I have been told (by Bryce Gibson) that: "Fastest Combat model that I'm aware of was Greg Hills Arrowplane, about 135 mph h with a nelson 36 on 30 nitro."

Hey Gerald!!
We put a watch on it the first time we flew it, it was going around 115mph. Its a very big and thick wing so I wouldn't expect too much more even with more nitro. I am toying with a thinner wing but the current design, really flys great. Turn is great and tracks great. It is a very fun plane to fly. Wish I got video of it but my camera went dead about 10 minutes prior to my flight. They said Larry got a kick out of it.

Hi Tom

Good to hear you got a time on the 'big' Super Satan it and it flew well and Larry Scarinzi was there to see it fly! Got my plan on CD for it and will need to build one too after the Vintage Performance Nemesis kit I got for our vintage meet.

Regards Gerald

That turned out pretty darn well.  Looks like it flies just fine.  I've got a slightly different version with higher taper.  It's a great flyer too.

I've just set up a 56in, 610 sq.in. wing for Fred Quedenfeld, our local stunt flyer.  He's doing well but still wants to do lots of work, hence a large, light combat plane gussied up with a fuselage to make it a profile stunter.

See you at Lebanon net spring?  I just got the table reserve sheet.

Tom, what did you cover it with, and can you post a close up photos of the fuel line set up?

Sorry Kevin I been a bit out of sorts lately and owe you some responses.

I covered this bird with ultracote parkflyer. Center section was re-enforced with 1/2oz. cloth. molded leading edge was re-enforced with lightweight silkspan applied with finishing epoxy.

My pitman Al would like me to face the needle to the outboard in case he needs to adjust it as I walk out to the circle.  I'll show the SS19 setup and a speed limit  setup.

Speed limit setup.  If you cant find OS1 needle valves Dave Fischer recommend the traxxas needle.

Looks BAD ASS..!
Love the "built up" booms.
It's always amazing to see a bag full of balsa sticks able to withstand 120MPH and all those G forces...!

I spent some time with Larry this past Monday and played the video of Tom’s Super Satan turning and burning from this year at Brodak. Larry was impressed with all the maneuvering and sound of the screaming Nelson in song. It was nice to see Larry’s expression, he lit up like he was 15years old.
