Pacifier pod build
« on: February 14, 2018, 05:09:06 AM »
This maybe in the wrong section but I figured combat builders/flyers do know the answer better. I am about to build a RW Sneeker that will use a pacifier (thanks Bob Mear) for fuel tank. I have heard of people using a Vienna can as a pod and would like to know how to set this up and install in the wing. Pictures would also be helpful too! All advice is appreciated as this is my first build with a pacifier system. Thanks, Tim

The vienna sausage cans are effective and easy.  Open and dispense the sausage product. Eating optional! Cut a 1/2" hole in it about  1/3 - 1/2  of the way along the side. Smooth out the edges and then make a balsa or lite ply cap for the open end. Fuel proof the inside. Make the spacing for the outer rib so that the can will fit between. After you get the motor mount and other planking done you can glue the can in right behind the leading edge and then plank around it. Some filler will seal up around the corrugations. Done. Sorry no pics. Somebody will have them.  TS

I use the plan as developed by Richard Wilkins for the Superstar.  Two balsa wood ends wrapped with cardboard.
The ends are not round, but flattened to the LE and spar.

I upgraded Richards idea by using two ends to cut a foam dummy.  I then wrap the foam dummy with file folder stock and glue together.  The pod is then wrapped with a turn of two of strapping tape.

Push out the foam and glue in the balsa ends.  The inside of the balsa ends was first covered with plastic film.

With an empty can you have limited sizes.  This method lets you design a pod that really fits.

What Tom S. says is an excellent method.
The prettiest pacifier pod ?
IMO, the all balsa as designed by Larry Scarinzi and used on his Super Satan series and my Scrambler design.

Here is a balsa pod I built for a Winder long ago, except that the top wall of the pod was 1/16" flexible clear plastic sheet so the pacifier could be seen inside.

I make mine from balsa.  Two clam shells that I fuel proof on the inside and then join together.  Outer skin is 1/16" and the sides 1/8".  I put fillers in the corners so I can round the outside edges.

Stubblefield used to use a  small plastic baseball installed in the wing. kinda ugly, but worked ok.
