Title: Nostalgia Combat
Post by: Michael Stinson on November 23, 2017, 08:20:27 PM
I have heard several people talk about Nostalgia Combat contests.  Is there a consensus as to what is Nostalgia Combat?  Are there any annual Nostalgia Combat contests?  Mike Stinson

Tucson will be having one in January. They call it VooDoo combat. Pretty well single bypass ports and old airplanes. extremely laid back. Tulsa did one a couple of months ago. They plan on putting a speed limit because some folks brought Nemisis airplanes with Nelson treated Super tigres. Its not supposed to be money thing. You should be able to compete with the old McCoy thats been laying in the drawer for 30 years. But it is fun. I run Johnsons personally. And have a pretty nice fleet of old airplanes now.

Bob, thanks.  I was thinking of either the Nemesis or Voodoo with a Fox 36X.  I saw someone making VooDoos and offering them on facebook.  I'm not sure they are exact copies.  How strict are they with authenticity?

Thanks, Mike

Mike.
the first organized contest was held in Vancouver B.C. 2012. Greg Davis and I were relaxing on a spring day at a local flying field and I wondered out loud if anyone would build "front row finish" combat wings from 1963 and before. It got going and I wish I could say that Seattle would have supported the idea, but it did not. More diversity in modeling interests across the border so it began there, then caught on in the U.S.
Here are some videos that are on Flying Lines

Here is my favorite video (see link on page) Joe Yau and I worked back and forth on this until it was right....lots of fun.
There is also the initial set of rules that has since been tweaked a bit. The idea was to keep it from becoming "just another" combat event.

sorry. The good folks at you tube decided we used too many things they didn't like and took it down. Bobby Mears has a copy for his museum and here is the private link to the promo video for C.G. It is a masterful piece assembled by Joe Yau. The pictures were from the combat community at large, the music and hot rods by yours truly. ....enjoy

"...the first organized contest was held in Vancouver B.C. 2012."

If you're talking overall (and not specific to your Graffiti event), then nope.

I think that honor goes to the late Doc Passen. He hosted an Old Time Combat event at his home town in Jasonville, IN back in the early 1990's. I was privileged to be a part of it. Good turnout, lots of fun. Johnson powered Voodoo's, Flying Saucers, Equalizers, Big Irons, on and on. A really fun day.

As stated before, Doc Passen ran a good one in Jasonville Indiana, 1990 or maybe 1991.  I wa successful with this G21-powered Netzeband Equalizer, built from Doc's plans.

There is some fear that an old time combat event might be said to come under the NEW fuel shutoff rule, which would effectively kill the deal.

it already is under the shut-off rule for AMA. I think that even though it's called a fun event, a lawyer would have an easy time pointing out the over 75 mph and that it's a combat event if there was an accident.

The answer is simple and is incorporated into our rules.  The thinking is that if you want to fly "combat" there are lots of events with much better performance. These oldies are just cool and fun, so we didn't see the need to lose them from an overzealous flyer going faster than he could control, and maybe someone getting hurt.

Running the event up in the Great White North will get around the shut off rule. We don’t have no stinking shut off rule . Just in F2D .

I think an "old time combat" event that does not reference The Rule Book would be just fine.  If it was done truly old school with .018" lines and nothing more than a G21, there would be no problem.  These planes were struggling to do 100 MPH before the Fox Mark III.

Just limit the engines to plain bearing , baffle piston configuration and speed won’t be a problem.

There are no real "rules".  Any old airplane qualifies. Some covered in silk, some in plastic. Some with pacifiers, some with bladders. Even some still with tanks. Just have fun with it. Get an old favorite plane and build it and come fly it. It's just fun.

The Voodoo's I am building are exactly like the ones I did 50 years ago. EXACTLY! What are the rules now as far as engine shutoff and tether. I have none of the listed. The only change will be 8X8 APC prop instead of the Yellow Tornado props used of that time period.

If you fly any combat in a contest, other than 1/2A or Speed Limit, you will need a flyaway shutoff.

If you're just sport flying you can do anything you want.

So for OT or nostalgia combat you would need to either slow it down to 75 MPH or use a shutoff.
The good news is that the new magnetic shutoffs are easier to retrofit to a model.

Tulsa is planning on another nostalgia combat in October some time. not locked in yet. I understand he has a $1500.00 prize fund set up for it too. I think they plan on using a 75mph speed limit via 7.3 sec in two laps pulling full streamer. At 75 any old engine will do the trick. even an old red head McCoy will work for that. Single bypass engines. bearings ok. But at 75 bushing engines are lighter and probably an advantage. Was a great time the last two years I've attended. They also fly regular 75 speed limit also with any airplane. They also have a conquers event for the combat planes, and an all out speed event. Once again single bypass engines. Randy is really trying to make this a large, mid USA, event. So please, if there's any way to make this event, please do so. I hate to see another great event go to the wayside because nobody attends. Then we all bitch about not having such an event. Mark it on your calendars. CK the AMA competition calendar for dates.

Robert:

I've been on the road for a few days.  Here is the shutoff info you requested.

It attaches with a single bolt.  The shutoff can be used during starting in lieu of a pincher.

I trust the flyaway feature, but my move has not been quick enough to trigger the at will.

This is "failsafe" in that fuel pressure closes a check valve that involves a steel ball against a brass seat.
The valve is held open by a rare earth magnet in the brass slider.  In circular flight the slide moves outboard and keeps the valve open.
In a flyaway the the slide moves inboard via a coil spring AND the ball is closed by fuel pressure.

The at will function is triggered by a really quick inward tug that drives the slide against the "safety pin".

The slide can be held open for ground operation by rotating the slide and engaging the heavy steel hook.  For optimum safety, disengage this function and have the launcher hold the slide outboard while launching.

I can give you one of these if you are interested.
