New 25 size Speed Limit engine.
« on: August 15, 2018, 06:55:17 PM »
Oleg got a one of the new Cyclone 25 SL engines to critique.  After break in, about 8 runs, it runs very well.  Easy to start cold or hot, tolerant of bladder fluctuations and pretty easy to set reliably.  There is about 1/4 turn between rich and lean. He had to substitute a Fora F2D NVA for the coarse, metal tank style one supplied.  The supplied venturi was a bit too small and had to be drilled out to get to 75mph.  The motor sounds like it will be easy to hit 80mph or better with a bit of nitro and a larger venturi.
It runs very smooth.  Doesn't slow down much in maneuvers.
It weighs 157grams, ready to bolt on.  That's about 20gr. lighter than an LA.  That's not a problem if you build planes.  There likely are a number of RTF F2D planes that could use it on 60ft lines with no modifications for Speed Limit.

We'll keep you posted once they figure out the price and availability.

Lets see if the pictures will attach.

When will they be available to the masses, and what is the price? I want to be the first one on my block to try one for super slow rat.

It kinda looks like a plain bearing engine, is that so?

Any provisions for a muffler? I wouldn't mind trying one out on something akin to a Skyray or even a lightly-built Twister.  Sure, it's for SL combat, but it can be propped down & turned loose, no?

Would be good for a light Ringmaster if you could fit a strap on muffler that would hold some heat in.
There will be a sunny day and we will fly our airplanes.

Hey Phil is it this engine that you hinted at a while ago?

Pricing is supposed to be $100 or so, plus shipping.  The AAC is really nice.

It is plain bearing, just like the LA.  In fact the pictured engine has an  LA crank in it.  Haven't tried it, but the P/L, venturi should fit an LA,  The back plate threads in, so no bolts to lose.

We thought it would have an F2D style head, but drilling and tapping a few holes is probably easier and cheaper than making a thread-on insert head.  The F2D heads can have problems at times.

No provisions for a muffler, and there won't be any in the first batch.  Cases have already been cast.
Availability will be at least a few months, nothing firm at this point.  Hopefull before next flying season.

It is the 'teaser' engine.

Nelson head please . Nelson plugs are cheaper, last a long time and give improved performance. At least have the option for a “performance “ head .
Just a suggestion.

Light engine, short engine mounts, and lead weights.  Not the combination I favor.

A Testors Series 21 Black Head 35 must be your all time favorite engine.
I have seen the light, and it’s powered by a lipo.

Paul, do you know if that would be legal for Sportsman Stunt Speed? Or does the class REQUIRE a .35?

The K&B 5.8 was even better, maybe 10.5oz. in combat trim.

Yeah, they decided to work on other projects at least for now.  My contact has been kinda out of the picture, working 60hr weeks.  I'll try and get him to check.  There are a few minor details in the machining that need to be changed.

If you want an AAC plain bearing .25 try a Brodak . I have used them for racing and combat . The performance is very good if you are willing to take your time.

For combat we use 10 - 15% nitro , 20% all synthetic oil . Find a hot plug, use the .40 intake , remote needle . 9x5 or 9x4 prop .The hot plug and synthetic oil make the runs consistent. Some of theses engines take many heat cycles to break in . The run two bladders on the ground break in crowd have been very disappointed with this engine .

These are the lightest sport .25 engines I have found (finding them can be the problem) . On a F2D model with a regular elevator and not a whale tail a couple of coins will balance the model . I have no idea how they work for Stunt .

Brad, how's the quality control been on your B25s? I've had some pretty lousy P&L fits on about three of mine, right out of the box. Three others were ok. The spare P&L set I bought was not a matched set, either; the parts were sold separately and had poor compression and no pinch when put together, as you might expect.  So I gave up on them.

But the standard, unmodified F2D plane few well with them as you said.

Mine had good fits (lucky ?)  . A couple seemed a bit too tight and took what seemed like forever to break in . Those went on sport racers . Some had tight front bushings that needed a light lapping . Overall the quality seemed rather good. My old Fox Combat motors never had the same level of fit and finish.
