Team Trials entries - 1977 and 2009.
« on: August 18, 2009, 01:51:07 PM »
July 4th, 1977 was an histroic day in FAI Combat. Our first Team Trials was held in Saint Louis, hosted by Gary Frost.

The mood was more joyous than it became in future, more serious Team Trials. Most of us were just happy that our event had finally been accepted as a full-flegged Official World Championships event. We'd never had a TT before and people didn't expect perfection the time out of the gate.

As one sage philosopher wrote; "There's enough sport flyers, just in Texas, to easily beat everybody in Europe". So, based on the that, the TT was just a routine contest to win the honor of going over and picking up the trophy.

The original 21 flyers, together with their won-lost records were (and still are):

George Cleveland 8 4 Team
Howard Rush     7 2
Charles Rudner  7 2 Team
Gary Frost         5 1 Team
Paul Smith        5 3
Phil Cartier       4 2 Alternate
Phil Granderson 4 3
Mike Strieter     3 3
Bob Burch         3 3
Neal White      2 4
Dick Imhoff      2 3
Charlie Johnson 2 3
Max Mearns    2 3
Diane Mearns 2 3
Bill Harris        1 3
Wayne Roberts 1 3
Jim Driver          1 3
Dewitt Wycoff   0 3
Bill Sprague     0 4
Bill Maywald     0 4

The contest was run by a unique, one-time, never-repeated format in which a "double elim-first round only" contest was run on Saturday, and another of the same on Sunday. So you needed to win at least 5 matches on one day to lock a place on the team. Howard and I had enough total wins to make something happen, but spread over the two "contests". Fortunately, this format was never seen again.

The early entries for 2009 are now closed and we will get an entry listing from AMA very soon. I'm sure that we will see several names from the 32-year-old list in the current TT.

Here it is direct from AMA in Muncie, The 2009 F2D entry list:

Alphabetical by first name, what can I say?

Alexsey Voytenkov
Allen DeVeuve
Andrey Nadein
Andy Mears
Andy Minor
Bobby Mears
Cary Minor
Chris Gay
Chuck Rudner - 77
Derek Ellison
Don McKay
Edwin Brzys
Emil Oppfer
George Cleveland - 77
James Ehlen
James McKinney
Jeff Rein
Joe Kresnak
Josh Ellison
Justin Ehlen
Louis Scavone
Mark Rudner
Michael Evans
Mike Willcox
Norman Lester Haury
Peter Athans
Phil Cartier - 77
Richard Lopez
Richard Stubblefield
Robert Burch - 77
Ronald Colombo
Roy Glenn
Thomas Siegler
Thomas Skinner
William Greg Hill

As you an see, we have four contestants from the 1977 program still in for 2009, Phil Cartier, Bob Burch, and Chuck Rudner and George Cleveland.

It's now the 24th and the cutoff was the 14th, but there's still a chance that AMA might unearth somethat fell through the crack.

With the addition of the final two names, we can consider the advance entry phase complete.

35 entries, triple elim, that's at least 105 matches, plus a goodly number of reflys.

You think we will still have combat in 2099? LL~ LL~ I know it's a typo error, but, it is great to see so many entries for a team trials.  To bad we can't get something like this for the NATS.  Need to get back in shape myself to even think about flying a combat plane.  Have fun at the trials and go USA.  DOC Holliday

Sure we'll have combat in 2099, and with some of the same people.

They weren't all that young in ought-77, either.

I checked the turf today and the NEW concrete FAI-size pilots' centre looks GOOD.

The weather forecast is a high of 80 degrees every day, Thursday through Sunday.  We got the rain behind us last week.

Pre-practice day, Thursday went well.

A squadron of street sweepers and cleanup workers appreared.  The site is the cleanest it's every been.

The word is two late entries checked in.

New total: 37.
