I have a kit that includes  parts for the plywood tail booms that are different lengths.  One pair is the original short booms and the other pair is a bit longer

Do the longer booms make the plane fly differently and if so .. how?

The original short booms were too short, even with a light engine.

As ball bearing engines like the G21 came into use, the longer booms were even too short, in the absence of heavy tail weight. 

So it all depends on whether you prefer longer booms or more tail weight.

A further modification was the boxed boom in which the booms were joined top-and-bottom with balsa to make strong and somewhat heavier "fuselage" and later the monoboom.

I do not fly competition combat.  This is going to be for me just to have fun with.

Be prepared to get dizzy until you get used to the speed.    But, I know you know how to do loops and eight's.  I can't believe that I still get dizzy once in a while and also the knees give me fits also.  But I'm still breaking my record age wise.
