the trick is to get one that doesn't look stupid.......also needs to be strong enough to apply a good sideways head-butt.
While fiddling with F2D trials and such, I think the worst looking ones are the bike hats. You do need one that isn't too far down your eyes. I think I have one round here someplace...a rock climbing hat that I bought for F2D. Drive on up to Kamloops and I'll give it to you.

Head over to Walmart and look at the skateboard helmets. Some have cool Graphic's.

I still have my Bobby Orr #4 hockey helmets.

An upgrade in helmet standards (years ago) rendered A LOT of helmets obsolete (for organized hockey).

I was sipping coffee and perusing email this am when I came across a suggestion from an un named, internationally known combat flyer and ex librarian who shall be nameless.
I think it sez it all......Bob, here ya go!

Apart from the FAI rules.  You really CAN get hit in the head in the combat area.

Funny you should ask.....January this year we're flying fast 2D in Tucson. No helmets required. Jeff Hanour and his opponent collide and one of the airplanes (dead engine) falls in and hit Jeff on the head. To the hospital and five stitches in his head. We were not required to wear helmets in Phoenix last weekend in Fast 2D. But after seeing Jeff's ordeal, I think I'll just go ahead and wear mine from now on.

I think it was 5 min. But I hate to say for sure. That would be a Phil Cartier question

The circle marshall asks the two judges if they are ready, then he asks the pilots if they are ready. After everyone is set to go he starts the count down clock from 15 seconds. After that he starts the match watch which is 5 minutes and then you are allowed to start your engine. As soon as you get your plane in the air that's when the judge that is timing and counting cuts for you starts his watch. At the end of 5 minutes the center marshall sounds off an air horn and the judges stop the watches. The judges also stop and restarted the watch for their competitor if they land and take off again with in the 5 minutes because he is timing you in the air. There is a three cut limit per match. You get 1 point for every second in the air, 100 points per cut (3 max) and 200 bonus points for a clean match (if you do not get into a line tangle or collision which causes either plane to hit the ground). So a perfect match would be 800 points.

Most guys do start their own engine or hold the plane while its being started.

The most you can score is 200 for a clean match, 300 for cuts and 300 (less start time) for airtime, at total of 800 points, less start time.
If you get a one-flipper and don't needle the engine you are losing 10 points by running to the center.
If you really want to win you will employ a flipper.

old age does count. here we have the pilot stand next to whoever is starting. Once it's running he allowed to go out to the handle.

Frank Picsz came out last year, or maybe the year before.  He was 80 at the time.  He flew 3 good matches before he got too tired.  It took him about 2 min. to get used to the idea that he really didn't need to try for a kill right away and had a great time.
