Title: James Mears
Post by: Howard Rush on August 17, 2010, 03:45:29 PM
James Mears, Bob and Andy's father, died August 4.  James was active in the heyday of Lubbock combat.  He was a cool guy and a lot of fun to be around.  I really enjoyed his stories of the old days.  The newspaper article, http://lubbockonline.com/local-news/2010-08-05/retired-auto-dealer-james-mears-dead-77 , quotes Andy as saying, “He was loved by everybody.”  He certainly was.

Sorry to hear this.  I flew a match or two against James back in the 60s, Lubbock or Wichita Falls--maybe one at each, memory dims.  A consummate gentleman, and highly skilled combat flier.  He beat me handily.

Sad news.  I never got to fly combat against him.  But, did get to meet him at several places around the country.  He was a gentleman. H^^

We were always very glad to see James when he came to the contests with Bobby and Andy and Nick.  It's sad that he is no longer with us, but he certainly was one of the pioneers.   :'(  God speed, James
