Today I became the PROUD OWNER of the original set of plans for the Bigiron along with a photograph of the original logo and a note from Veco concerning the kitting of it. They are full size and the pistol is different than what came out on the kit.
They are on some sort of parchment paper and it is quite brittle, so I am considering having them laminated. What do you guys think?

BigIron,
If you have a decent UPS Store around Wichita, try them for a nice 100% (and accurate 100% it is around here!) copy or several, before you laminate the plans. Out here that's $2 per.
Laminating may degrade the copy suitability. Getting the UPS Store copies gives you a master for the hordes of people who will pester you for further copies, a working copy, a copy to chop up for templates, and some more paper to crowd your plans storage barn.

Thanks Lou. I am going to have to iron them somehow to get them flat enough to go through the copier, that is for sure. I do have a UPS store handy. Carl Berryman gave these to me himself . I am very proud to call Carl a friend.

That "parchment" is probably vellum. Test your iron on a corner first, it may be adverse to heat.

Hey David,
When you were admitted to Pineville, did they still have the "Combat Flyers Ward"? n~ ~~> ~>

Ray, I don't believe that it is vellum. I have never seen vellum like this and I am an engineer also. It has turned brown and is extreemly brittle and as thin as tissue.
Jim and David--- eat your hearts out--- (G) I will try to get the drawing flat enough to get a copy from them and let you know.

Super Tig-- Barry Baxter has plans for the Phantasy in his plan service.
Carl designed the Bigiron, the Qklahoma Twister, the Perculator, Super Twister and the Phantasy.

Marvin,
Put me on the list too. I`ll be glad to send money.
I built four Super Twisters. One I add two rib bays. Made a great plane. It ran 111mph and turn better than the small one`s that I had.

nothing beats wing area for turns, as long as your motor can haul it. That's why I went to 500 square inches when most every body was still running <400.
-
Oh. The secret is out! Like why clip 4" of your (Aeromodeller) Peacemaker spars, l.e., etc. to bring the span to the designed 36" when you can leave them alone and get 40" span!
-
I'd sure like a copy.
-
Howard, why would you want a copy??? The bigiron didn't fly as good as your Nemississ--is si-er what ever you called it.
Send me an E-Mail at <mdenny4@cox.net> and I will see to it as soon as Ican return home. (appx in two weeks).

Carl is a real gentleman. I lost to him and his Big Iron in the quarterfinals of the '63 Nats. Sure brings back memories ...

Has anyone ever BUILT a Phantasy? Wonder what it was like to fly in Combat.. Must've been a pain to build, too..

Yes I have built several and they really flew great. not as hard to build as you might think. Carl made a fixture to build off of and could build about five per week, working evenings only. I used temporary jig fixture fron old ceiling celitex panels and could get about three per week. The FIRST vestage of the Phantasy was a Super Twister that I added four (4) inches to the center section and flew it against Carl and one of his Super Twisters. While I didn't beat him, he saw the better "turnabiliy" and came out with the Phantasy. My "improved Super Twister still had only two booms.
They flew better with the Needle Bearinged fox Combat Special than the heavier Fox 36XBB or Johnson CS BB. (in my opinion) I fully intend to build another one some day.
Barry Baxter has Full sized plans for it.
