Florida F2D Flying Frenzy 2008 Results
« on: April 29, 2008, 07:13:31 AM »
The Jacksonville Rebels hosted a great, triple elimination, F2D contest at the Herlong Airport in Jacksonville, Fl. Sixteen flyers from 7 states and Mexico drove or flew in for a weekend of Great weather, good food, and some outstanding combat matches.
The contest registration fees were divided up between Mike Willcox and MACA. $400 was donated to MACA for distribution to the US F2D team when they head to France.
One of the best matches of the day was between Mike Willcox and David Owen which Mike won 3 cuts to 2. It went the full 4 minutes and was fast and furious action from the start. I think David’s aircraft had grass stains form his outside loops from VERY low altitudes. There were many other good matches but that one stands out in my memory.
Along with the great flying were some displays of true sportsmanship. One flyer changed his score form a win to a loss when he saw the score cards for their match. He said he knew that their flight was a loss for him and the scores had been reversed or a cut had been missed. This loss was his third.
As with many contests there was an incident involving one of the contestants before the contest started. After checking into the motel they noticed a helicopter flying around the area. Going outside for a smoke he was met with a VERY hostile police officer with a drawn firearm demanding that he get on the F*****g ground NOW. Then handcuffed and taken to a police car. After a review of identity cards he was released. It seems that there was an escaped convict in the area and, while not matching the convict’s description, he aroused the suspicion of the officer.
On a sadder note the Contest Director, Mike Schimieder, had to leave mid morning as his daughter had been in an accident in Tennessee. I talked with Bill Duane last night and the daughter was OK.
Leonardo Silva’s grandmother died Sunday and Judy Curtis spent a lot of time on her PDA and cell phone getting him better and faster reservations back to Mexico.
