AMA 1975 MACA Nats winners pictures.
« on: August 06, 2009, 10:32:12 PM »
Howard
I have to eat my words.
You were there.
Chemo has erased some of my memories. Forgive me please.
This is going to be in sections as scanner is not big enough.
If I look drunk and stoned I was--stupid hippies.
I have the list of names.
And several more complete MACA news letters.
Any interest?

Beauty is in the eyes of teh beholder as the saying goes.  It is hard to beleive it has been that many years.  Back then my planes of choice were Winders or Bigirons with Fox or Tigre power.  The 70 NATS was my last try at combat when they made a safety rule change and I sat in the middle of the circle watching my brother trying to get the Fox to run.  A lot of memories from that period of time.  DOC Holliday

Hey Doc.
I barely remember not being able to start my own engine.
I think I remember sitting a whole match while dad tried to start my Red Head McCoy while I was yelling flood it and it will start!
and Flood it it not a Green Head!
Probably some profanity also.

This must have been changed back fairly soon after I started competing.

By this time I had the G-21 down pat and could start, run to the center and be in the air usually before the others got started.
Youth is wasted on young people!

I folded many Winders--you? the G-21 was a bit much for the Winder.
I do have a flyable Winder with hoped up Torp GH hanging in shop.

Looking through old MACA news letters at the moment......

Volume 2 no.1 jan 75
Plans for Ira Kellers "Bee Ware"

Vol 2 #2
More pics
Howard Shenton drawings on bell crank mount/motor mounts--nice drawings.

Full page add for Moose Allen Combat Specialties (sniper mk/7) Fell out of one issue.

Vol 3 #4
Phil Cartier Gotcha plans

Several more issues.

Let me know and will scan and post entire News letters or just pics and drawings before they deteriorate to dust!

Back then I would as some say over built my combat planes.  The center section was usually fibre glassed and silk covering or SilRay was my favorite for combat.  At Wichita in 64 the Big Iron took three matches before the guys from Topeka could knock it out of the air.  Three rounds and the same guys from one club and they were what we called bellcrankers.  By the third man I asked him if we was going to fly combat or not.  Needless to say he hit the ole Big Iron dead center and bound up my controls.  64 was a good year for me as Wichita was always considered the warm up for the NATS.  I went home with seconds in combat and carrier.  With Minor brothers flying at the field has me hankering to maybe try speed limit combat.  Need to build a new Clas II Carrier tho.  DOC Holliday

PS:We also have Rob Hein flying again.  jeh

I dont know about trying combat again.

When I go out and fly something like Excalibur or one of the others one flight- 2 and I am ready to sit down.
I guess I just work the airplane and myself to hard.

4 cycle on a fox stunt--that's my current comfortable speed! Z@@ZZZ

David, those pictures bring back many fond memories. I recognize many of the guys and gals there.  That (1974) was the year that I started my comeback after  5 years of being out of competition and flying only sport and fun stuff.  I lost out in the first rounds of both Fast AND slow combat.

I hope to torture myself----I mean fly one soon!
Its a bash of combat cat with shorter nose moment and longer tail moment at 16oz with Fox 6 bolt back radial mount.

Have one test flight on bad fuel--seemed to be pretty hot--of course I am pretty cold! or should that be old? n~

That was my first and only Nats, Bruce Bina and I travelled from Fargo ND in an AMC Gremlin stuffed with airplanes. I was seventeen years old at the time, how trusting parents were then. I  had two or three Foxfeathers and a Ringmaster. All I remember was using the Ringmaster in the finals and folks pitching in to help switch the 36x to pressure. Got some coaching from Mr. Rush.

Met Pete Mazur, he entered a HP 40 powered "Blunderthird" (third blunder in a series) to win fast rat.

Richard Wilkins with his Fast Blasta caused a sensation, the plane flew different than standard combat planes of the time.

Howard Rush entered a tri geared Nemistunt in PA.

Saw a C freeflight arc over and punch a hole in the hood of a car.

Just some fond memories.

We were all them hippies stuffed in the Blue long wheel base dodge window van next to the big green motor home at the combat site..

Kinda remember something about a ring master on pressure.....

I think I remember yall ,a short and a tall guy--age difference.

We actually had a hotel room.

The Ringmaster was originally set-up on suction, so someone there loaned me a tapped back-plate. Howard Rush advised, if I could fly low inverted, do that.

Bruce Bina was tall, I was the short one. Bruce flew Dinosaurs with G/21's.

Is there a way to use the numbers on the pictures to determine who the people are? If too big a problem, no problem.

Putting names with those faces seems like an awful lot of trouble, but I think a lot of people will enjoy it. That's an interesting story about Richard Stubblefield and you "dukin' " it out at Lake Charles...he never has hung up his spurs, continues combat and made the last USA Team, looks like his name is on the draw list at the F2D TT just held in Detroit.
Thanks again,

I keep staring at the faces, some are easily recognizable, others not so sure.
Everytime I read "big iron", I think of 747s.

That sorta' chokes me up, tell you what! We've just put the finishing touches on the DMAA Newsletter, Bill's idea of painting the whole plane white, spars, ribs, all, then using silk made a really neat plane. The tip weight was about a half/bag of Daisy Red Ryder BBs, you could see'em through the silk. I'll make sure you all get a copy of the newsletter at BR. The next plane he built was an original with planked wings and an upright, completely cowled in motor.

Thanks so much,  David

That would be the Green Monster then. He later painted flames coming out of the exhaust area.
I kept the remains until recently, just keep running out of room!
I do have the plans and other plans of his.

Well you just never know what one will find when cleaning off the work bench!!!!!! HB~>

I pieced it together to make it easier?
Click on scans then click again to enlarge for reading.
(2 times click on pics makes them clear up as well)

Not Dad and I have same name. He goes by Bill and I go by David.
They list has me down as Bill.
Not near as confusing as my son having same name and we all 3 enter an SCCA race! LL~

Yea--- I defected to R/C but back after  34 years.
Well except one last contest in Alexandria.
Stubblefield and I flew of for first in fast. I made the kill, twice! I went out with a bang. I think Buck was 3rd that day.
The circles were removed for tennis courts a few months later. Was 79 or 80 I think.

I have played with C/L with the my boys since then.
Mostly 1/2A combat in the yard.
They must have burned up a box full of TDs on 40%!
Flew a little .35 stuff with them from time to time.
Both are decent R/C pilots as well.
Had Dad doing R/C for awhile--he never liked the electronic no feed back connection!
He said hes been trying to Email you and they bounce.
Do you have his Email?

Man, I hope this weather straightens up or I am just going to be a spectator at B.R.
Not even close to ready HB~>

David,

First, THANK YOU FOR POSTING THESE PICTURES!  Until I started looking at these pics all I had was faint memories of those days and those Nats.  So many people, so many matches, so many planes  After that I never missed a Nats from thru '80.  Finally managed to win Open in 78 (might have been and too much fun!  My first Nats was '67 in Los Alamitos, won 2nd in senior.  the last of the single elimination Nats) think there were 63 entries in Open. Went at the Nats this year.....it's not even close to what it used to be.  Saw Mike Tallman there, he and I flew in that final match, Riley Wooten was the Event Director.  Mike flies flies RC Pylon now.  Also, had dinner with Moose Allen just a few weeks ago at the stunt Team Trials.

Really tough to describe what the NATS were like in those days to those who never had the experience.  Those pics and the MACA Newsletter are one hellova really cool ride in the time machine.

Thanks again

As phil says, the early NATS were to behold.  Nothing like missing mess because we were still flying.  64 was my first and 70 was my second.  64 got Riley in second round.  70 never even got airborn.  That was the year they made an over night ruling that pilots could not start their own engines.  Have not even tried to fly combat at the NATS since.  DOC Holliday

[[That was the year they made an over night ruling that pilots could not start their own engines.]]

I was 14 then in 70.
Memory says it was sooner than that although you know them memory things......

It did not last long thank goodness.
Dad taught me to start engines but he did not have the knack. VD~
Sat on the ground through several matches during that time.
