Title: East Coast Combat Champs 2020
Post by: phil c on August 12, 2020, 11:31:04 AM
The surprise- we actually had a contest and people came!  Six entries and 6-8 spectators, plus some interested kayakers.( The site is also a boat launch area).

Weather started out cool and peaked at 90°F at 3:00pm when we quit.  Even taking it easy it was exhausting.

The results:

1st   Al Ferraro          1630
2nd  Fred Quedenfelf 1542
3rd  Phil Cartier         1499
4th  Dave Edwards     1384
5th  Barry Lyter Jr.     1409
6th  Barry Lyter Sr.    1169

Given the lack of practice and practice matches it was a miracle there was only 1 midair.
Everyone had a good time, as much as you could in that heat.  Fortunately it didn't get really
hot until 3pm, when we were done.  90°F and high humidity.  Yuck.

Other comments:  we reduced the clean match bonus to 100 pts. That tightened up the scoring considerably.
Going into the 4th round the spread was less than 100 pts and it was anybody's contest to win.
Practice makes perfect, or at least not a dismal performance.  Everyone got at least one cut, which,
considering the last time Barry Sr. flew(about 35 years ago) that was great.
The synthetic fabric or flagging tape(if you can get it 1.5-2 in wide) makes great streamers.  Only an extremely lucky
snag, perhaps by the leadouts, can get a lucky cut.  It almost has to be a prop, or prop nut, cut every time.
