Title: Does anyone out there remember Ed Portz. He designed the Yegad
Post by: Gordan Delaney on January 21, 2013, 09:33:57 AM
He flew at some of the Buckeye meets back in the sixties. Would like to contact him if anyone can help.He designed the plane called the Yegad. It looks a little bit like the Winder. But has a nice thick airfoil. 1.750. Maybe this will help jog some memories.Does anyone remember the yegad. I just built one. Wish I had built it in 1965.

Thanks
Gordy

Gordy;
Don't have any idea how to contact him but I remember him from Buckeye :o

I think you mean the EE-Gad II which was ahead of it's time and actually did fly well. I'm pretty sure it was designed by Hi Johnson tho, and the plans are still available from Barry Baxters plan service. The orignal EE-Gad (also Hi Johnson) was very ugly (IMHO) and even higher aspect ratio. During that era, I built and competed with some of the EE-Gad II's (as well as some I modified to simpify the build) as I was given the plans by Hi and used "factory special" Johnsons on them. I have very fond memories of riding my bicycle to Hi's shop in the Orange/Tustin area of CA and watching Jack Garcia dyno'ing a batch of Johnson 35's and then giving me the best one of the batch for cost (around $10.00) if memory serves me right. :)

I know the plane your talking about but it is not the same. Ed called his the Yegad. I have a set of his plans. Looks alot like the Winder. But it has a thick airfoil. 1.750. I just finished building it from his plans. I am waiting for the snow to melt and the temp to raise here. I thought his plane was the best one at that Contest in Buckeye. Only took me 50 years to get around to build it. When my wife gets home next week with my camera I`ll post a picture of it.

If it only took you 50 years to get around to the airplane, how long does it take to do the lawn? LL~  Do you have a pic you could post? H^^

Here's the plan for the one I was talking about:

Perhaps the Yegad was Ed's own version or offshoot of this one. Much better performing airfoil than the Winder or Spectrum. I used to fly against Terry Prather (Winder) regularly and was never impressed with the airplane but hey, Terry won the nats and I didn't ??? I was overseas in the Military the year he won it. ;)

I found a couple of old pics, circa 1964 of one of my follow on designs with newly acquired G21 ST power.

Thought you might get a kick out of them H^^

Reptoid,

Nice looking Combat plane. Is that tiger a plane bearing engine? Sorry it took so long to respond. Where do you live? I`m in Utah so I have to drive a long distance to reach any Contest.

Thanks Gordy.
That's a G21.35 BB on that one.

I saw the pics of your Yegad and it looks very nice also.

I live in So-Cal and fly with Rich Lopez,Chuck Rudner, and others most week-ends at Whittier Narrows. I Don't compete much anymore but still fly alot of 1/2A (TD's and Fora/Cyclon stuff) and occasional F2D or 75-80MPH.
I also fly a little stunt with a group of retired guys at Whittier most Fridays.

I surprised we have`nt met. I`ve flown most of the guys in Cal. one time or another. Know most of them for years. I fly stunt now. I flew the Yegad a couple weeks ago. 133mph. Bad idea. I was hurting big time that night. Have you ever heard of the Combat plane called the Challenger. That was my design. Flew it for a long time.I do go over to the Combat circle a visit with my old friends. Then go back over and fly stunt.
