Way to go Jim!

Demon's are cool.  VERY simple and fast construction, stable in the air, yet still turn pretty good when built right and weighted/trimmed correctly.

Back in my younger days, a veteran combat flyer was kind to this enthusiastic young man and helped me learn to build straight airplanes, how to trim them, and how to fly stunts. (Actually, he taught me a LOT of combat-related stuff.)  He said to learn to fly a combat plane and two-up, pick a solid design, build 'em by the numbers, and fly that one model until you are an accomplished flyer.  He recommended Riley's Demon.  I listened and applied, and he kept a regular supply of Flite Line Demon's flowing into his garage hobby shop called "Bill's Hobby Shack".  I had a ton of fun that summer and went from barely being able to fly a sloppy loop and equally sloppy wingover... to being able to fly the entire stunt pattern with a Demon (combat plane), as well as being able to fly maneuvers while not looking at it!  So much fun that summer.

So, Demon's are special to me.  They bring back a TON of good memories.

Thanks Doc..I got a whole lot more to do before im done (11) more fast to build before gscb time...serious testing to do...

Andre I too like the Demon have built 20 or more back then and flew at the Nats a whole trunk full and about 60 VOO DOO's in my time. This was from RW's double kit from flight line, and the Johnson was my first one from the 60's that I have rebuilt.I still have my original voo doo that i flew at Willow grove nats, and 8 or so that I recently built.Got the BOSTAS on the stand right now and hope to survive the 2 of them...they are something else to build but really fly nicely with the g-21 tigre.I have a special project to build after the bostas...super twister that was the last one I got from Marvin just before his passing...all of my airplanes are flyers and all engines are runner's...having a ball...Jimmy

You need a Rumble.

I think I had the only Rumble in the KC area.  What a beast and it was rugged.   Not so fast as others, but could take the punishment.

Myers was pretty disappointed by the kit.

Thanks for the kind words, Jim.

Since I long ago knew I wasn't going to be flying combat with my vintage stuff, then I could take my time and build them "artsy-fartsy" and not concern myself with a mid-air 10 seconds after launch!

However, it DOES pain me for one to bite the dust.  My last Voodoo was a whale of a flyer. I had it balanced to where it turned really good, had a really good 36X on it... I flew it and flew it. It was my "go to" airplane when I wanted to try to impress the troops.  Had it for years.  Then many years ago while showing off with it at a Gluedobbers contest, the soft leading edge finally gave up and it folded up during a hard/tight maneuver.  Boy that one hurt me right here (tapping on me ol' ticker).

So, the old adage is true: ALL airplanes that you actually fly WILL be crashed... someday.

Great looking Demon Andre! I have one laid out for my next nostalgia plane. I built several as a kid. so easy to build and get straight.

Thanks Chad...the airplanes shown above are the
matador
combat cat
2-super voodoos (john joe)
2- long boom voodoos
winder
sneeker
nemesis ii mk 6
demon
guilotine is in the jig but i figured i'd just build a couple of Bostas first...lord help me
thirty hours  later  got 1 bosta ready to cover...now i remember why i only built 2 bostas back in the day.One lasted 35 seconds and the other got me down to the semis and got bellcranked  after about 1 minute..built a dozen voodoos in the same time as the 2 Bostas..but i had to have one or two for my fleet this time.
I got 30 motors and `10 more airplanes to build before contest season but will do it...I got some speed limit planes in the cooker also for the up coming season...Jim

Ok now I see Jim. The Combat Cat looked like a Guillotine to me from that angle. Real nice looking birds. Hope to see you in speed limit sometime this year. Last May at Huntersville there was a vintage combat flyoff...no matches were flown, just solo flights. Don Stoneman had some nicely built birds that flew very well. Bring yours if you can make it-  Chad

I think I had the only Rumble in the KC area.  What a beast and it was rugged.   Not so fast as others, but could take the punishment.

As I remember, the $6.95 price tag for the Rumble was all anybody needed to see.  In the day of 75-cent minimum wage, the Rumble looked bad compared to three Voodoos or Combat Cats.   I might have been a good plane but nobody could afford to find out.

Here's anther oldie.  The Competitor Hobbies COBRA at $2.95.  A tough build with cap stripped ribs, but a great flyer.  Not so tough in a crash.

Paul:

Not familiar with the "Cobra"... do you have a picture of one?

Jim:

You ARE going to be bringing all your vintage combat planes to the GSCB/UMAC'ers Nostalgia Combat Fun Fly in September, RIGHT???

A very fun thread. Thanks for starting it, Jim.

The Cobra, like the Ambroid Scrapper, was had a very short profile fuselage with the engine back against the LE and a hinged stab.  Both the Cobra and Scrapper had basic rectangular wings and slide-on fuselages.

I don't have a picture or plans for the Cobra.  It seems like "Competitor Hobbies" was a short-lived venture.  On the other hand, there are plenty of ads for the Ambroid Scrapper.

Hi Jimmy,

I will have to see all those vintage models at Huntersville.  I might even have one there!
