I have two Norvel .061's and would like to try my hand at combat.
I also have a few blocks of foam and thought I could maybe use foam wings?
Can someone suggest a good starter plane that might use a foam wing for these engines.
I think this could be fun. y1

Hi Rootbeard,
I would go with Phil's Lil' Hackers (I think that's what they are called). Inexpensive in bundles. ;D

The LI'l Hacker is virtually indestructible with the Norvel on it. Not Nationals level performance, but I assume you want to learn what to do before the NATS. To equally matched planes can give you a lot of combat flying in a couple of afternoons. You will probably have to build up a couple of needle valves using the 124 tpi NVA's from the backplate of a Cox product engine(the one with no tank). Solder on a piece of brass tubing to make a T needle valve(don't block the fuel hole) onto a strip of 1/32 in brass.
For better performance Larry Driskill's LiteHawk is pretty good. Not as sturdy, but lighter and turns tighter.
If you put a 4-4.25/3 cut down Cox black prop on it and 25%+ nitro is will fly close to what a Cyclon or Profi will do on the same prop. The BB engines do go faster on purpose built glass props($5 a pop), but the planes are already too fast even on 42 ft. lines.

Hackers are neat.
yup, lite hawks are pretty good. I have had a few.
Start scrounging up old arrows from your friends that bow hunt.
It will teach you how to cut foam too.

the halflite is fun too, see the model aviation archives. Very easy to build. Might want the wing to be a tad bigger for Norvel 061, like increase the
root till you get to 32" - 34 inches.

Check the digital archives of Model Aviation for the Halflite. It is in the January 1988 issue.

1/2A Combat planes are a blast.

I just put my first run on a new Norvel BigMig 061. In my backyard. Well that was louder than expected! Left the muffler off too. Yikes!

Why yes they are. Lots and lots of RPMs = LOUD! ;D

They're less noisier 42' away spinning around. The streamers also muffle the noise <= Ken
