Title: Can anyone tell me anything about a Stels 5.8 combat motor?
Post by: raglafart on April 10, 2008, 02:06:35 AM
Hi
Can anyone tell me anything about a Stels 5.8 combat motor? Just acquired one on the bay and wondered if anyone had any info on them. I have it earmarked for our Bendix class here in Australia that uses up to 36's
Cheers John

I got one 36(twin rear exhaust) just for kicks.  Never ran it.  Rich Lopez used a couple in combat for a few years.  He reported that it was pretty much the equivalent of a good Fox Mk VI.  It'a a bit lighter.  Hope you have a local guy good at chroming, and a machinist to build rods and pistons.  Not that I'd expect them to fail, but the spare parts supply has to be near zero.

Thanks for your reply Phil, mine is the twin exhaust motor too. So it's no Nelson then?

Nope, it's no Nelson.  The best MkVI mods and the Mk VII were pretty close, but Henry's motors held(hold) together better.

The early ones were "high timed" and needed to be propped like a F2D motor.  The later ones had lower timing and could use more normal props.  I have one of the high timed ones and ended up using a APC .21 pylon prop.  It spit fuel out the venturi until it got really turning.  They were very light weight.
