Gordan has been busy building some of the classic combat ships from his younger days. This plane is the Scrapper which was designed by James Cowart and kitted by Ambroid. Power on this ship will come from a hot Fox Blackhead Combat Special. Another great looking plane from Gordan's basement workshop. I'll update this post with additional pics as they come.

awesome,,
I was wondering when Gordan was going to build it!
its actually a better looking bird than I thought,,
-
I'll bet it flies great too!

Here is a model that was built for Combat Graffiti by Barrie Hobkirk. It flies great.

Mark,
I built my first Scrapper in 1962. I forgot it did not use maple motor mounts back then. I guess that`s why the front of the plane came lose doing a match. So I took a little liberty and modified the front end and put maple mounts in like the VooDoo. The Kit was so bad I use the plans and scratch built mine. The kit had also a set of Omega plans so I`m almost finished with it.But I`m Building it like my friend Ralph Day built his in 1963. He side mounted the engine and put a 1in. tail moment which he used wire for the short booms. He also had 4oz. tank in it and it only weighed 14oz. with a Johnson Combat special. Sorry to say he lost it in a match with me. My 22oz.VooDoo had a mid air with it. The only thing he had was a bell crank and push rod left on his lines. Maybe it was to light.

cool story Gordon,, thanks for sharing,,
yeah the wood was suspect at best LOL the finished product looks cool though, and glad that set of plans proved to be worth something too,,

Gordy finished up the Scrapper. Looks great!
Scrapper graphics nicely done by his daughter.

Those all look great
Challenger
Scrapper
Omega
didn't the Omega have a a fin? I saw where he extended the stabilator...cool
Must get more done on the ones I am building. I am terribly slow at dope, sand, dope process
Makes me wonder about the wisdom of re-learning how to properly do silk covered wings

Fredvon,
Yes, the Omega had a tall fin and a upright engine with tank strapped on top behind the engine. Also the elevator was attached to the back of the wing.
In 1963 my Friend Ralph Day Built the Omega with the side mount engine and the tank in the wing with a one inch wire booms to hold the elevator.

Aha!
I have never seen an Omega, just the plan some place when trying to decide on what old skool combat planes I wanted to model
I am not a fan of the finned versions...simply for aesthetics reasons.
I have love or hate for any particular combat plane of yester year except the VooDoo and Mongoos that I flew as a teenager
The Big Iron I will build is because I got a bunch of engines from Marvin Denny and the Big Iron was one of his preferred combat warriors
I met Reilly Wooten last year so I am building several of his combat variants
Kinda wish a few more of the cottage guys would do many more kits of these old birds...simply because building with laser cut parts is much more enjoyable for me
And of course I really likes the Challenger you did so when the plan gets here i will put in into the scratch build que

I built an Omega as a kid and was totally freaked out by the claims of 110 mph in the instructions....I kept reading it over and over again. By the time IO flew it I was a wreck. Somehow I just knew that my Mac .35 was going that fast.
My personal opinion on the old birds is that pre voodoo was more interesting because of all the experiments in shapes and sizes. Delta's are my favorite and can just imagine what influence breaking the sound barrier had on our combat designs.
Riley led the pack, but there were so many interesting ideas kicking around back then. Slowly....very slowly building a sweet sweep. That thing had some advanced thinking to it. I never could have built one as a kid though...not a straight one. LL~
-
Ken I hear you but I probably could have built one then better than now if i had had the shop and tooling I have now
Sweet Sweep out of the question now with these arthritic hands and poor eye sight
I drool over Bob Hunt's electric version...he is a true craftsman
-
Get Walter Umlands Sweet Sweep, he makes it easy.

Just a note here. I forgot to mention the weight of the Scrapper was 17.2 oz. I hope it flies as good as I remember. I`d like to see 100 mpr. But this black head 35 is stock. So I`ll just cross my fingers.
