1/2A Stel powered by Cox TD.15?
« on: December 10, 2007, 11:50:47 AM »
I have cupple of Cox TD.15 special MK-II from the 70s, and like to make some use of it.  I'm just wondering if they will work in the 1/2A Stel?  as the Cox TD.15 is probably too slow for the F2D version.

Thanks in advance.

You'd probably never be able to get the 1/2-A to balance. It'll fly a full size F2D RTF just fine, though you probably won't get 93mph out of it. The Outlaws were actually using this engine in Combat in the late 1960s, and doing very well against diesels.

Aren't those F2D ships a bit big for the TD.15? and from what i have heard.. the 1/2A Stel still has a wing span of around 40". (correct me if i'm wrong)

I guess it depends on how fast you want to go. A Norvel 15 with an APC7x4, and 10% will take a full size F2D over 80 with ease. Your TD should be able to go 75 or better.

I would be happy at about 90mph with those engines.

The TD is perfect for a full size F2D since it is such a light engine, comparable to the Fora, AKM, etc.  It will  just be slower.  For sport flying, try going to 012 lines.

Listen to them, your .15s will work fine in a new style plane. If you show up saturday or sunday, I'll show you an article from 1975 about the world champs and what they were running. It was the start of the large ( 400 sq. in) FAI plane. They also were using coxes, super tigres and rossis- it was the death knell for the diesel in FAI combat. Also a story of the props (tornado and top flite nylon) growing as much as an inch before seperating. 6 1/2 x 4 was the recommended prop from back then resulting in a reported 20,000 RPM in the air.
   Later,
           Ron
ps. I'll also bring the bladder mat'l for you.

Peter Chinn Review of TD MKII Special in Oct. 1965 MAN recorded .48 hp at 20,000 RPM.  He suggested that a 7 x 4 wasn't enough prop.  Weight of engine was 4.45 oz.

Back in 1974-75..  7x6 yellow Tornado choped to 6.5x6 was the ideal combo with the ST G.15 on my Nemesis & Splinter (25% missile Mist). I didn't like the 7x4 cause the engine just screams away but it goes slow.

Is this plane , or plans for it available? Would a norvel .061 ame or cox .09TD fly it? Thanks, Ray

Let us know how it goes. Don't overtax the engines - from articles in Aeromodeller of that time period the Cox Mk. 2s were prone to breaking rods, IIRC.

most of the destroyed Cox Mk-2s were caused by high nitro (50%).  If you stay with 25% or less nitro you should be OK.

I don't remember what the Brits were using (this was the Outlaws team who pioneered the use of glows in British Combat) but I doubt it was 50%. Might have something to do with the props, too, or perhaps simply running the engines too long without checking the parts. I think they used cut down 7x4s.

Not only did the use of the Cox's Super Tigre's & Rossi's ring the death knell for the good old faithfull Oliver Tiger they also rang the bell for FAI combat in England when we were using Oliver Tiger diesels there was combat contests every weekend just about and a fleet of 4 nylon covered models would last a complete season (those were the day's sheesh I am getting old LOL) the British Nat's always maxed out with the maximum amount of entries being 128 with guy's hoping someone didn't turn up so they would be able to fly, the last British Nat's I went to there was around 20 entries that was I think 1981 may have been a year or 2 earlier my memory isn't as good as it used to be with everyone using either Super Tigre G20-15 or Rossi 15 and the most common models being Fraise design Boomerangs or Dave Wood Titans with a smattering of Mike Tiernan Andurils, it wasn't until Richard Wilkens went stateside and flew here that the Outlaw's managed to start getting glows to work consistently having seen how the American fliers managed to get glows to work for them, oh yes and foamies mustn't forget foamies first one that had any success in England I believe was the Superstar.
Yep I am a replanted Brit., that was as bad (if you want to call it bad) that flocked to using glows along with everyone else, they were cheaper and faster than a Copeman tuned Oliver personally I used Rossi glows I found them to be just alittle faster than Super Tigre G20-15s and could always get a fast restart IF the model was re flyable after hitting the ground or midair crash. I tried using Cox engines early on trouble was I was always buying new nylon carb/venturi bodies.
If it was me I wouldn't use those Cox TD .15 engines, something tells me parts are not as easy to come by and putting them on a combat model is a waste of a good Cox TD .15

I have one of those airframes in the bunker right now, also tinking about an engine.

I can't see where it would fit into any current event, it's just a high-tech sport plane.
Sure it could be used as intended, 1/2A combat, but nobody's active that I can get to, and the engines are extinct.

My menu of engines is:

TeeDee .09
OS Max III .15
K&B Greenhead 15.

Actually, those two Cox TD.15 has a custom brass support inserts for the venturi already.  The Cox TD .15 wouldn't be good for stunt..  and combat is where these engine really shines.  Its no good to me if i can't use them for combat anyways.  All my ST G.15 needs new rear bearing and P&C etc.. I'll probably get the Profi or the Fora later on though,  but meanwhile i like to have some fun with the good ol' stuff. LOL

The F2D planes finally arrived last week..  It has no engine mounts, so I made them up out of solid maple.  It is pretty much set up now for the test flight.   The CG was originally at 2 3/4" from the LE of the center rib.. which i believe is a bit tail heavy, so I added 1/2 an oz in the engine mount to bring it forward to 2 1/2".

Hopefully I should know how it flys by this weekend.  #^

That looks like a terrific plane.  Hope the combo works for you.  I got out a old 35 powered Big Iron a couple of years ago and what a blast.  After several flights the arm was getting tired.  Later,  DOC Holliday

Thank,  I still enjoy flying my ol' ST G21.35 powered Nemesis II.  I,m hoping these modern ships will be even better.

Let us know how it goes.

Well,  the test flight on Saturday went quite well.  and it has pretty much proved that the Cox TD.15 Special MK-II has more then enough power for the F2D combat ship. as it performed "incredibily" tight and fast maneuvers without losing much speed..  yet the level flight was quite stable.  also .015 lines were used in the test flight.

I think the area to improve on the performance as is will be more speed during flatout level or any straight path of flight.  (a Fora or Profi etc should be sble to fix that)

Bottom line:  It was most impressive in the turns & quick response.

Thanks for all the replies..   H^^
