« on: November 12, 2014, 08:48:57 PM »
What's the wing area and wing thickness on a modern 1/2a combat plane?

Thanks,
MM

Well, according to the Yuvenko web site, their models have 940mm (37 inch) wingspan, and 270mm (10.6 inch) chord. But I think the chord number is suspect since the wing is very tapered.

http://yuvenko-f2d.com/index.php/airmodels/0-8cc-c-l-combat-1-2a.html

I'd suspect something like 250 sq inches wing area.

I can measure some models later tonight. I have a Viko 1/2a model, a GRS Barracuda 1/2a, and the Brodak Gladiator 1/2a at home.

I might also have info on the Sonic Chicken 1/2a at home, too. Buzz Wilson has done some write-ups for MACA news on the Sonic Chicken.

Thanks Chris, I need to build a plane for my P-Zero. So, about 250 sq with 36" span but how thick?

Here's what I got:
                              Brodak         Barracuda        Viko
Wingspan                    36                36                37
Chord at center            10 1/2          10              10 1/2
Chord at tip rib              5                5.75             4 3/4
Thickness at center        1              1 1/8             1 1/4
Thickness at tip rib         5/8             3/4               3/4

Area                            279              283.5          282.125

(Area = ((Center Chord + Tip Cord)/2) * Wingspan

Hope that helps!

That's interesting. With a light fuselage I could use a flying clown.

No doubt about the Clown.  I have one with a TeeDee 049 and it goes fast.  And I mean the Clown racing size Clown.  It will really go with a modern Ukrainian 049.

You could also go with a Junior Flight Streak. It's wing is 230 sq inches, too. I think it is more "combatty".

All of the 15-size planes (Sig Acromaster, Jr Flite Streak, Jr Ringmaster, Jr Lightning Streak, Whipsaw) would work - and actually be a bit on the small side - with a modern 049.
