Title: 1/2a Combat Suggestion
Post by: Jacob Godsey on July 21, 2012, 01:20:03 PM
Hello everyone,

New here but not to the forum scene or Control Line. I am looking for a 1/2a (.049) or 1/4a (.020) CL combat plane. Specifically for the Cox reed valve engine line. More specifically for a Killer Bee block with a tank and a Pee Wee. I prefer plans. Cannot afford kits and love scratch building. There is a 1/4a plane called the Lil Stingray. I was really wanting to build this but the only plan I can get is an image file. Does anyone have a pdf?

Thanks, Rolla

How about the Lil' Satan for the Cox?  I built one for a friend back in the '60s and it went very well with a Black Widow.

The plans have been available on ebay.

I have the plans for the Lil Satan. I was looking more for something different. Old Timey perhaps. I recently built on called George. Has a rather thin airfoil. It was from an old article in a magazine that someone posted online. But yeah, I have had the Satan suggested quite a bit. May be a reason for that.

Check the Carlson Engine Imports website, I bought a foam 1/2 A combat plane kit from them several years ago.

I would rather it be balsa. I do not really like the foamies.

I think I am just going to try the Lil Hacker. It comes with two planes and the covering material. I have a couple of different engines to try. Anyone have experience with this plane? Got any tips?

I suggest taking the wing plan for Flying Clown (as used in 15 Clown Racing) and building it light with a skinnyed-down body.

I got a full-body Flying Clown down to 8 ounces and it goes like a combat plane with an old TeeDee.  Most of the available old school 1/2A designs are far too small to manouver well.

I would do that except I doubt I could build light enough. Never thought to weigh my planes. I would also rather it be for a reed engine. Thanks though.

Considering the fact that your choice of engine is a Cox reedie, your best bet would be something like the Combat Kitten. The Kitten has more wing over the Satan and really just flies better due to a slightly thicker wing as well. These can be easily scratch built and is a framed up model that you desire. Ken

Does anyone have plans for the Kitten? I have considered building it many times, but could never get a hold of the plans.

Barry Baxter has some neat choices in the 1/2A section . http://www.controllineplans.com/ Ken

Consider the "Dragonfly", published in Model Aviation Feb 1989. It is an all sheet combat design designed specifically for the Cox Black Widow engine. Maneuverable enough for combat, tame enough that a relative beginner can fly it, and over grass...practically indestructable. Mine is on loan right now to a friend who is using it to learn to fly inverted.  They can be built in a couple nights as well. 8)

Hey Jacob,

Consider too, Dirty Dan's GOLLY GEE WHIZ.  I purchased the plans to this 1/2A combat job some years ago from MODEL AVIATION.  My son built the plane and powered it with a Cox TD .049.  It is wild and will fly rings around the LITTLE SATAN and the DRAGONFLY.....but to each his own.......TD.....
