WTB venturi and needle valve
« on: August 17, 2024, 01:24:48 PM »
I am a little bit out of touch with flying model airplanes because I haven't picked up a handle since 2007. I am looking for a venturi and needle valve for an AP wasp o61 if anyone has got one or knows where I might find one, Maybe somebody still makes them? Thanks for any help PeteJ

  Hi Peter;
    A couple of years ago, this subject came up in the 1/2A section. There was a guy that produced a venturi/adapter but I think he passed away. In one of the threads it was noted that he used the Cox TD-.049 venturi and spray bar set up. i got to looking into making something myself, and discovered that regular 1/4" brass tubing from K&S has an ID that is just right to run a 1/4"-32 trap into it and that is the threads that is on the bottom of the Cox TD venturi. I tapped the tubbing, cut it to length and JB-Welded it into the crank case of the Wasp engine and the venturi assembly attaches now just like the it does on the TD.049. Do a search on the 1/2A section using the Wasp .049 as a criteria and see what pops up. I haven't run mine yet, but others report that using the old adapter worked well and there may be other ways to mount something I don't remember. In talking with Jim Hoffman , he just locks the throttle in a certain position and flies them that way. This gives you the advantage of closing off the throat opening as desired if needed to get the run you want.

The trick is getting the TeeDee parts. Every time I look, one or more of the parts is/are unavailable.

I'm starting to think 3D print or machine a typical venturi and run a Cox reedie NVA through the case and venturi ala Medallion.

This place on ebay has a bit of the stuff needed and seem to be fair prices

His name is Matt. I buy direct from him. He owns this site:
http://www.exmodelengines.com/home.php?cat=285
The link takes you directly to his TeeDee parts. Sadly, only the venturi is currently available.

The other guy is Bernie. Again, I buy direct sometimes. He owns this site:
https://coxengines.ca/front-end/
Bernie shows the needle valve body and venturi, but no needle valve.
One is left looking for the TeeDee needle valve.

I'm still thinking a custom venturi and Cox reedie NVA may be the fastest way to bypass the carb. I also took. A look at eBay and saw those guys are expecting over $100 per engine. For that much, I'd ring up Bernie for a Tee Dee II if he still has them in stock. He did a short run of them earlier this summer. I got one! A Norvel can land in your hand for less than the AP at this point..
