Title: Will a LA .46 be

I didn't want to put the entire question in the Subject line so here goes....

Will the LA .46 be enough power for a 56" Span 50 ounce thereabouts Gypsy???  I think so, but would like all other opinions as well??

Pat Johnston was using one in a Shark 35 (pretty big, comparatively heavy plane). It would very, very well.

Yep., LA 46 would be a great engine for that, perfect size,,
I know my LA 46s ahve pulled lots of weight,, nope aint gonna say, but its at least 8 oz more than your projected weight, on a 570 inch wing, and didnt squack at all,, it was great then too,,

I powered a 630" Imitation with a basically stock LA46, modied only with Randy Smith NVA and tube muffler. This is a fairly thick wing that requires good power. No problem at all. It really likes the APC 12.25 x 3.75.

My profile Cardinal is 50 oz. and the L.A. 46 goes vertical with authority anytime I request it.........Also using the APC 12 1/4 x 3 3/4 prop.

Aren't the mounting holes quite a bit different between the OS LA .46 and the ST G21 .51?

Yes, I have cut a set of ribs for the larger Gypsy but that's as far as I have gotten so far.  I'm going to build up the Stab and Elevators to lighten the rear load some so the LA .46 will balance it pretty well.  Next is to extend some 36" 1/8 inch balsa to 37" to make the slightly longer than standard fuselage.  I've also dreamed up fuselage doublers out of 3/32" balsa laminated to 1/32" ply with carbon fiber in between.  My buddy Mike Thompson built one in '73.  That one weighed 48 ounces and was powered with a GMA modified OS .40H-S.  I'm going to duplicate that plane except for the engine.

The OS .40H-S flew the Gypsy very well.  As I can remember about a 5.2 lap time on 63 foot lines and plenty of line tension all around.  I did fly it a few times before he left for the '73 Nats with it.
