Hi Folks,
Here is another newly minted Gieseke Nobler. I just completed my UHP component kit after about 3 months of effort. Power is Aero Tiger 36. Weight is just under 47 oz bench trimmed. Paint scheme is pretty close to Bob's '74 (or was it '76?) WC plane. I stripped the SLC, recontoured a bit here and there, built a balsa cowl and detailed cockpit, and recovered with silkspan. I am hoping for test flights this weekend.

There were not many mods to the UHP kit but here is a list of what I recall:
1. Added cutouts in the aft fuselage per the TF kit plan as insurance as I typically build tail heavy.
2. Removed some structure in the vertical tail for the same reason as above.
3. Added access hatches on either side of the elevator horn so that I could add a bit of down elevator if req'd.
4. Installed semi detailed cockpit (with parts left over from a Nobler I built 25 years ago) and replaced canopy. I tried to remove the kit canopy from the fuselage with careful application of heat and was almost successful... but I had a few wrinkles in the plastic so I used a Brodak Nobler canopy as a replacement, which appeared identical to the UHP supplied one).
5. Built a balsa cowl. The supplied F/G one was nice, but I am not a big fan of F/G cowls, and plus I wanted a cowl that would allow me to get my fat finger over the venturi for priming.
6. Faired the fuselage into a 1 3/4" Froom spinner and added a cooling hole on top over the engine crankcase per Bob Gieseke.
7. Built L/G fairings and wheels pants per the TF kit plan but wider to accept 3/4 x 2 1/2" foam wheels. Wheel pants are removable so that I can use some fat 2 1/2" Banner balloon wheels for rough field operations.
8. Stock controls
The plane balanced exactly at the design CG without any ballast required (that does not happen for me that often!)
I have always liked how Noblers felt on the end of the lines so I looking forward to flying this one with the sweet running AT 36.

Hey Paul: I just got one of these, the SLC has lots of wrinkles. How did you go about stripping the SLC ?

Why remove the SLC covering? I good scrubbing with a pad and you can put the silkspan over it and use a lot less dope. Even poly-span will work over it.

Can't you tighten it up with a heat gun or a blow dryer? I have the same model, still in the box. The covering came tight as a drum.
Give UHP a call and ask for their advice.

Yea, mine had a couple wrinkles as well. I thought I could do a better job fairing in the canopy and a balsa cowl by stripping it down to bare wood. I was also worried that I might see more wrinkles in the future as this was my past experience with plastic films. I recovered it with silkspan, dope, and auto clear. I probably paid a weight penalty as mine is one of the heavier ones at 46-47 oz. In any case with the AT 36 it flies just great. It really is a pleasure to fly.
I just peeled the SLC off and used a heat gun if it felt like it was stuck extra well. I remember it came off pretty easily with just a few balsa chips here and there.

Mine has lots of wrinkles everwhere. I doubt it looked like that when first applied. I am concerned that if I heat shrink again to remove the wrinkles, they might reappear down the road.

Super looking Gieseke Nobler! I do hope Bob G. can get to see it sometime! The finish came out great and the G. Nobler can carry the weight especially with a good running A.T. .36. Makes me want to build one! Great job.

very nice have built and flown many noblers over the years including the jr. version with a fox 29 on it had to make the fuselage a bit wider in the front and add a couple ounces to the tail also put removeable landing gear in the wings flys nice very fast currently assembling a gieseke nobler I bought on e bay and am going to put a os 46 on it also got an arf version from tower still working on that one alsohope my gieseke version turns out as nice as yours

I am flying a UHP Gieseke Nobler in Classic at Brodak's this year with a stock OS FP40S power plant. I removed all of the SLC covering and recovered with polyspan and finished with Brodak dope. Comes in at 45 oz. with wheel pants.

Which would be the best choice for an engine in my UHP G/N; the A/T 36 or a LA46?

A/T .36, The LA .46 is too much power.
I am going to drop a OS .35S into mine due to the power of the OS FP .40.
The .40 is too strong!
