Well,
I finally got all the sanding, sealing, voodoo and hoo doo done on the Avnger, AGAIN,,,
so I braved it this weekend, and sprayed the darn thing.
much to my delight, i didnt have any major issues with peeling paint, or masks this time.
The Frisket I cut on my plotter worked great with no bleeds anywhere, and it didnt lift any color with it this time,, ( well of course except for where I WANTED it to lift, like where I didnt want that color down,,you know what I mean sheesh )

The two trim colors this time are better than the first time, and I like this pattern better. For some reason my spray out panel of the lighter color, shich tested as a rich root beer brown, didnt spray that way on the model but it is what it is, and while I would have liked what I wanted better, this will do,, * to damn late to do anything now anyway lol*
the darker color is actually black with copper and red pearl in it, though it doesnt show in the pictures so much.
This week is some minor detailing, the mask did lift just the slightest bit of color around the canopy edge, so  a little touch up is needed there.
Still trying to decide on whether or not to do any ink lines, I havent ever done them before, and it would dress it up a little bit, but, just not sure I want to brave it on this one,,

Clear to follow this week,,,,,,
Let me know what you all think
Hope you enjoy,,

Man, that's just horrible, Mark. Why don't you throw it in the car and I'll take it off your hands in Portland?

Sheesh, that is just spectacular. Go ahead and touch up the canopy edges, then just shoot clear. You're done, man. Can't wait to see it in the sun.

Yea, Mark, it's a shame that this artwork won't be seen at VSC this year. It would be a contender for the Concours award, that's certain.

Thanks for the positive feedback gents!
Well I made up my mind on the panel lines,
I shot clear on it tonight, no panel lines. I dont want to risk it at this point. The basecoat isnt that easy to clean up any errant miscues on so its better safe than sorry.
overall, I am fairly satisfied. Of course, just like Randy, I see things that bother me, but hey, after the initial fiasco last spring, its painted, and I can fly it, so it cant be all bad.
I really am looking forward to getting it assembled and flown.
I really wish I could make VSC, however I think after having to take a leave from the flying circle last summer, its not probably a good thing to jump into a contest with an un flown airplane lol,,,, of course there is the finance aspect as well.

I will let you know how I did on weight once the clear is cured enough to handle.

Mark,

Heck, half the guys at VSC fly unflown planes. There are more maiden flights at that contest than I thought possible.   ;D

I think Mark is thinking it will be around 57 or 58oz. And that should be just fine. Sure is pretty.

Mark,

This is a great choice for engine. I know I love mine. All the power of an ST60 in a lighter package.

Well, from what Pat Johnston, and Randy tell me, the Mag .53 is like a strong ST .60.
Pat says he was swinging a 13x5 or 13x5.5 prop on it with no sweat. Of course Pats airplanes are a bit lighter than mine? But still, I dont think I will be lacking for power.
I mean, were talking a 640 square inch airplane, that ( pending final assembly and weight checks) should be in the 56 to 58 oz range.
Yeah, dont think power will be an issue. Shultz flew this plane on an OS 35 S !

as a teaser I am posting a jpeg of the plans, well one sheet , the wing set.the resolution isnt that great, but to reduce it to a mangable size, well thats what you get. Trust me, they are pretty crisp. Drawn in Autocad . All the parts are already setup for Laser cutting too.

HA! Maybe "ARTZIE-FART-ZZZ-EEEEEEE-RRRRRR'" but....I would bet...YOUR NEW UPDATED VERSION is far and away more accurate in actually "fit together plan puzzleee'wise.

I was PUSHED AND JABBED to quickly INDIA INK MY LABORED TIRED PEA-BRAIN AND EYEBALL OFF in time to meet the article publishing date.

Everything in that article from story-to quickee-toons  and inked drawing was a TOTALLY MASSIVE HEAD RUSH TO THE POST OFFICE GIG.
INCLUDING THAT DROP-DEAD AIRMAIL SPECIAL DELIVERY from the pits of hell and Shultzie old garage stunt hanger.
However most of the flying time was with that beautiful tweaked Bob Wilder OS 40 engine..that I had to add a sizeable intake restrictor in order to get enough engine run time to complete the stunt pattern. (Which in the end..perhaps  I should have stayed with  that beautiful Art Adamisin OS 35 that you see in the photos of the first Avenger 35.
The Wilder OS 40 Stunt engine was beautiful..but I flew the  VD~ VD~ VD~out of it on that dirt n' gritty Space Center parking lot. Sadly due to my lack of good judgement. That engine died an early death. ???

Mark,

I discovered that with the Novi I built. First white, then candy green, then toner coat, then pearl coat, trim colors and clear (with yet more pearl). Looked pretty cool, but that's 4 full coats of color just for the base. It adds up quick, that's certain. That plane could easily have been 4-5 ounces lighter if I had just shot base color, some trim colors, clear and let's go flying.

But it sure looked cool.

Well, Lets say I didnt see it for three days after I cleared it, I still wasnt all that excited when I cleared it. After three days, I went to bring it home, I am much happier,, well until I put it on the scale. IT should still be ok, but its not as light as it could have been.

still lighter than your new PA airplane,, with an extra 40 squares  wing area,, LL~ y1 y1

Randy, well it will be what it is. I am going to ignore the weight and fly it. Nothing matters until I get it in the air. The more I fondle it the happier I am with the paint scheme. But as I said, I wont be going down this path again, way to costly weight wise. Long story short, Its right in the ballpark with Pats Mustang for weight and the Avenger carries an additional 20 squares so, it is what it is. its shiney, its almost ready to fly, and I am happy for the most part with the end result. Now I want to build another one and seriously eliminate some of the issues that added weight through the process, but, I have bf 109 to finish first, then a profile electric, then,, well then we will see.
I have learned a ton through this build though and appreciate all YOUR and Pats support, not to mention Shultzie.
Looking forward to getting some air under its wings soon.
I have it all hinged, engine mounted up, and getting ready to start preparing props for it. Probably during the race tomorow. I Have a starting point, so I will be carving up some props  to bracket where I think I need to be. Then its a matter of making a set of lines, and a new handle for it.
looking for nice weather, either in Boise, of maybe over on your side of the state. I know its not going to get nice enough here for a while yet.
OH YEAH, pictures,, I better take a bunch of pictures too, I can do that here its supposed to be sunny tomorrow, cold but sunny.

Hey Shultzie,,
about that test flight,, uh,,
yeah well,, Hopefully you will get to come see it. I am anxious to let you look it over .
Linda already told me if I forget pictures, and anything happens, well I just best not come home,, but then shes not all that fond of the color so its all good,, silly girls, dont know cool when they see it right!
I do think the test flights are coming up pretty soon, weather is starting to get better, yesterday was 60 degrees,, and sunny, of course the 15 to 20 mph wind wasnt really very conducive to test flights,,
I have to admit, this is the first plane I have built that actually has me nervous to fly lol,, better get over that though, its only a tool to do the job,,
((or in my case, to pretend to do the job lol)

Where & when is the first flight? Schultzie and I will drive over. Pullman, or Tri-Cities?  #^ Steve

Honestly Steve, I hve considered bringing it over to that side of the mountains to maiden and trim it. Likely to get better weather over there sooner than over here. Finding a paved lot to fly in is a challange without dodging parking dividers over here. I WONT fly it on the grass, at least not to start with. After I lost the P-40Q due to a dandelion in Portland year before last, on its fourth flight,, yeah, not doing that again.
I have thought about Boise, with Pat, or Portland with Scott, or up north somewhere with Pete and crew, just not sure. depends upon how schedules and finances work out.

Hummmm? I have seen your plans that you posted on this website but I can't recall ever recieving them through the mail? I have alway been curious and would love to see a copy to see how you managed to stuff a larger engine up front as well as the new improved cowling hatch...and beefed up fuselage and aft section details.
Here is another shot of the original plans again....for comparison?

Shultzie,
hveing dabbled a bit in some RC,, ( shhh dont tell ok) It is pretty amazing what has become of the hobby development wise, I am however appaled that in that picture with the newest member of your clan, there is an RC MODEL, and no indication that you are fighting that corruption with something control line, I mean come on man,, lets get with it.

as for the Avenger,, again, top secret, I have been looking at this model thinking how slick it could be with an electric drivetrain,,, hmmmmmm

I have a set of plans for you seriously,, if your coming to watch in Portland, I will bring them otherwise email me your address and I will mail them out to you,,

Well, given my current employment status, I probably wont be able to make two trips over to the west side before the portland contest. So what I am thinking is that perhaps I will come over a few days early on the week of the contest and work on trim Thursday and Friday. It remains to be seen for sure yet, still planning.
I would LOVE to have Pauls help trimming ,, we will just have to see how it plays out. I will let you know for sure what the plan is as soon as I can. It would make me happy to have you see the beast before I commit it to the stunt gods for its first flight, after all, you NEVER KNOW<,,,

Mark's managed some rather creative ways to put a plane in. But I'm still the king of crash after the USA-1 went in at Vancouver BC. That was the most spectacular crash I've ever seen.

Shulzie    Here is another I beam called Avenger. Does any one know who the the well known builder is? I will give you a clue, his wife is Paula. How about that famous piece of runway, where is that?

Ed,
Builder was Larry Barickman.
I "think" the "famous piece of runway" is Whitehouse.

Roger that was to easy for a Florida guy. Yes you are correct on both. I only saw this model twice.I think Larry had problems with it and set it aside.I believe he had a Aldrich reworked 40 in it and it was underpowered. It he didn't crash it Paula must still have it.

Shulzie
It sure looks a lot like the Gladiator. I have never seen a Gladiator so I looked in theClassic Era book by Tom Morris and also on the CD with the classic and old time models and articles in it. I said it was a I beam but maybe I was wrong. Here is another view of the plane. Larry was a very talented builder. I came across the picture as I was getting a group of Larry's pictures of him and his planes to post in the AS Time goes By section. Larry and Paula were good friends and Paula helped my wife Rebecca do flight totals and all the paper work at the Tampa Bay line Flyers Contests many years ago. Here is another view of the plane. I think the tail moment is longer on Larry's version. I remember it seemed long when I took the picture.

Yea, Mark handed me his camera with minimal instruction and said, here, take some pictures for Shultzie, then went flying.

Glad I got the plane in the frame at at least once. The plane looks wicked in the air.

Randy, you actually got the plane in about half the pictures ;)
just a brief update on the trimming process, I am kinda lazy today,, got back from portland about one this morning,, only about 7 hours drive,, not as long as Pats,, so instead of rewriting the whole thing, I am just pasting the report I made to Shultzie via email..

Trimming is progressing nicely, Scott and I bench trimmed it to the expected specs, then added a 1/4 ounce tip weight, a half ounce nose weight, and moved the leadouts back an 1/8 for insurance.
After about a dozen flights, I have removed the tip weight, moved the lead-outs forward, moved the landing gear forward,  and narrowed my handle spacing a fair amount. as well as shortening the down line at the handle, now she flies pretty honest. I found that trying to do the top of the squares, it was wanting to drift towards the canopy, and level flight wanted to be at 7 or 8 feet. After conferring with Pat and Randy, I decided the trick was to shorten the down line, which then would let the plane fly level across the top of the squares when I hold my hand in its muscle memory position, same with level flight. It made a HUGE difference. Then moved the lead-outs forward a bit to eliminate some yaw. Its flying pretty well now. I decided that I would not fly it in the contest, just not enough handle time for me yet. I started out with a Thunder tiger 12.5 x 5.5 prop, Randy's recommendation, I set the needle for 8800 rpm, and had 5.0 to 5.1 second lap times right off the bat. after several flights, Pat suggested I try the paddle prop he had on his shark some years ago, its smaller diameter, but wider blades. The first flight on it I was doing 5.4 second laps, with BETTER line tension even flying slower,, very interesting in deed. got the lap times back to the 5.1 range and its pretty happy now. the Squares have settled down, after I narrowed the handle spacing. Two sad notes, the first flight, as I landed, I moved my hand to neutral position as I do with all my other planes. I had the gear to far back apparently, and it tipped up onto its nose scraping the bottom of the cowl badly. I can repair it, and fix it with a dark trim colored scallop most likely. I was really hoping it got the spinner, much easier to fix,, sigh, oh well. The second thing, about flight 6 after landing, Randy says, hey your pilot committed suicide,, nice, the pilots head broke off at the neck. Now THAT pissed me off, but what can you do. I have a game plan for fixing it, just going to take some time. Short story, she flies wonderful so far, no major vices, and rock solid at level flight. PLENTY of corner,, and nice smooth rounds. I hope I can get more time on her before regional s, I think she will serve me well.

Sounds like great first flight reports, Mark!  When the airplane gives you confidence through it's looks and manners, you automatically fly better.   y1

Keep on working with it, it should really do the job for you!
