Title: Taping and taping and taping, oh my
Post by: Randy Powell on November 25, 2007, 03:09:32 PM
OK, so here is the Cobra in tape. Took about 6 hours to tape and mask this. I pulled it prematurely after painting (should have left it to today to pull tape). I thought it was pretty bad but as it turned out, I only had a couple of spots to reshoot, so I'm fairly happy. Sorta.

Dave,

If I hadn't had to cut into it to rework the controls, I doubt I would have done it. For me at least 2/3 of building a plane happens after it is framed up and sanded. I sorta wish I would have left the Cobra alone and repaired and refinished the Novi, if I was going to go to all this trouble. But I suppose that will happen too at some point.

Finishing can be a tedious process, that's certain.

Mark,

Depends on which one my wife will let me use. The original was ok, but I have another graphic worked out with a Vargas girl ...

edit for a passing thought - happens a lot to me

When I started the repairing, recovering and refinishing of this plane, I had considered doing something a bit more subtle than the original paint job (which was as subtle as a bulldozer). It's currently in silver and white. I'm debating on using the remaining colors I had picked out or going with something a bit quieter. Still thinking about it ... which is why it's still sitting in silver and white.

Well I guess knowing that YOUR subtle isnt as subtle as some peoples, subtle would be ok, but I do have a thing for retina scalding graphics you konw
whatever you c0ome up with I am sure will be cool

First, we were talking about subtle colors, not graphics. Secondly, there is somewhere between almost none and none that this particular graphic will end up on the plane since I do have to continue to live with my spouse.

I do have another idea that may be cool.

Well, more taping tonight. Got it ready for the next color (except an hour or so of masking). I kept looking at it and was stuck with an idea. When this happens, it usually looks pretty cool ... about 3 out of 5 times. Guess we'll see this time. Grin..

Have to take the kid up to register for his senior year of college tomorrow. Hope to do some painting when I get back. If not, Thursday.

Randy,

You don't have ANY hair if that last one doesn't go on th ebottom of the wing! LL~ LL~ LL~

A late friend of mine once put a certain picture of "Norma Jean" on the bottom wing of his Pattern Plane!  I understand it was the only picture of her of its kind..........  :o

Go ahead, quit stalling, and get the Cobra finished! ;D

Bill,

Hey, I got the kid registered for college today and still managed to get the third color sprayed on. I haven't pulled the tape yet, but it looks, ah, well, interesing. I'll think about the pic. I have this other one waiting in the wings too.

Hey Leo....I resemble that remark!!!! VD~ VD~
When I saw that photo of the "lady in black" a flood of memories came rushing back to me when I used to play a trumpet gig on weekends at a Portland Ore. night spot waaay over there  in NE Williams Ave, called THE COTTON CLUB....where a young black lady wore a "work-suit" just like that one shown here by Randy!!! LL~

Her stage name was "Abby" and everyone in my stage band fell in lust with her every weekend. She was a beautiful gal and could sing almost as good as she looked. Her talents were many and once she even offered to "Change my life" (whatever the weight of that meaning ment...and sadly I was never brave enough to find out what she had in mind...since her love interest in those days was the Conga player in our band and he was one really huge big wall of a man with a short temper and a long------------neva mind! Sorry there goes my fantaseeeeeee's again.

Her real name was Myrtle Johnson in real life and attended Portland State with me....as a music major.
(I named my beloved old Bassett Hound Abby in tribute to her...(however I have never shared that information with my dearest CEO-CFO-Misseeemaaaassssa about that)

OK, I was going to hold off until all the color was on, but I've had a few harass me about posting a "progress" picture. So here it is. Please, no snotty comment about the shade of red.   ;D

I was wondering how that was done. You must spend small fortune on tape considering all the checker board you do. I need someone to teach me how to do this. New paint job looks like it will be awsome. Boy my typing keeps gettin worse. I am always in a Modifying Mode H^^ H^^ H^^ H^^ HB~>

Leo,

The trick is to figure out a progression that both puts the least amount of paint on the plane and requires the least amount of backmasking. Having to retape along complicated paint lines or paint lines that come to points or whatever can be a tedious and difficult process, to say nothing of insuring that you can seal it adequately so that you don't get bleed. The reason I shot silver first was I only had to do that once for the original paint line (white/silver demarcation). After that, it's all relative mask, so I don't have to have tape lines come to a point (hard to seal up and a mistake just waiting to happen). I hate backmasking.

I don't like having to have 3 layers of paint on the LE, but I'm pretty light so far and as long as I don't get too heavy handed with the paint, it should be fine. Still have 3 colors to go. Hope to finish up to colors this weekend. Mostly, anyway.

One more trim color, and lettering!  It would be an elegant paint job then. ;D

Well, Bill, that's what I'm thinking about. The original plan called for the addition of a purplish blue pearl and a pearl orangy yellow (both custom mixed colors). But I've been thinking of just using the yellow then some very discreet blue highlights. We'll see. I keep staring at it and wondering if I should just do some black outline and call it good. Again, we'll see.

Well, I got the yellow on and it now looks like an Arizona State Sun Devil uniform. Hmmm. Probably would have been OK if I had just stuck with the red, silve and while. but with the yellow, I'm now going to have to put on the blue. We'll see. I'll take another look tonight and decide what to do next. Should be interesting, anyway.

That is, if the house hasn't washed away. 4" of snow on Saturday and 4" of rain on Sunday. Today they are predicting another few inches (and the way it's raining out there right now, I don't doubt it). The creek's pretty full. Hope my driveway isn't washed out when I get home.
