Any thoughts and advice for this kit?
Thinking of picking one up.
I have a Brodak S1 kit. But the built up fuse looks nice. How about weight?

Any kit made by Sterling would be a challenge because of the bad wood. If you are going to fly stunt there are a lot better designs around then the Ring Masters. Even for OTS entry. The nostalgia aspect about them is understandable. Simple and perform well. I have 5 Ring Masters. That said, the modern designs offer a lot better flying stunt plane than RM.

The Super Ringmaster even with a Fox 35 in it is always nose heavy and requires tail weight. Without that fix it flies like a slug. The comments about the wood are also correct. If you want a Ringmaster stick with the profile version and preferably a newer version

I built quite a few of the Super Ringmaster and the profile and I liked the Super better. The old Foxes ran better sitting in a upright built up body. The average kit was to heavy but one built from good wood will fly well. They are not Old Time Legal. I would not waist my money buying a old Sterling kit unless it was cheap and then I would copy the parts onto light wood.

I built a Sterling Super Ringmaster, using all of the kit's wood, and covered it with SIG Koverall and dope, Powered with a Fox .35- it weighs 34 ounces. These are pictures before the windscreen was installed, and some lettering. It flies very well, and taught me lazy eights and inverted. Mine required no lead to balance it.

My son that flies (sometimes! LOL!!), Aaron had one years ago. It was built fro Tom Dixon plans IIRC. It had a K&B Stallion .35 in it and flew pretty well. It would be very hard to win Classic with it anywhere, but if you like to "fly" it does a pretty good job.

Use the kit to clone the parts. Build and finish as light as possible. Then go fly the covering off it while you have fun. Not every build has to be for competition. In fact that is why I keep the old Bi-Slob and a couple of others around. Get tired of doing he same old pattern and start losing concentration. So then one of the other planes come out and I have fun. Nothing like doing lazy 8's and seeing how close you can get to the grass.

"seeing how close you can get to the grass." Boy, did we take that to extremes back in the day! We would do a wingover and see if we could center the old canvas bag used as 1st base! Had to glue the outboard wing back onto the old Ringmaster too many times! LL~ LL~

There is an alternative to the Sterling Ringmaster. Get one of Pat Kings 45 sized at 52.5 inch W/S and 593 in2 wing area. Better wood, better airfoil, bigger model, what is there not to like. It's not old time legal and I haven't seen one in classic so you might as well build one that's got a little more working for it.

I have that I am about to start building ... nice design ... excellent wood. Interested in your build. Anything I should know before I start on it?
