UUUMMMMM,

The USA-1 is the greatest, but one that will not go out of my head when I'm looking through Tom's
Classic bibliography is.........Well, lets have a guessing contest.  It's in Tom's Bibliography and it was
published in 1959 (big clue there).  Let's guess.......

Charles Mackey's "Junkers Gobbleswantz"? Well, it won the '58 NATS, so I figured it'd take awhile to get it into print...and, I like it. I remember reading the construction article in the library at PHS. Neeto!  n~ Steve

That D-tube Detroiter has always been a head scratcher.  I do not know that Rollie MacDOnald ever actually built anyting but the I-beamers.  Of course there is the famous story (documented by Fred Carnes) about how Rollie sold a damaged Detroiter to Charles Lickletter & Fred Randall in Indy and those guys repaired it, flew it then dissected it to learn how it was built.  They then drew plans and did their own version known as the Saturn.

Seems I was wrong again.  Got this in a note from Bob MacDonald, where I asked him if his Dad, Rollie, ever built a D-Tube Detroiter.  Bob's reply:

"Yes there was one. It was built and published that way because the magazine didn't want give dad enough space to allow explanation of how to build an I-beam. That was the only one and he didn't like it. In fact that year he built two that looked alike one D-tube and one I-beam. They were both painted light blue with dark blue and gold trim."

Dennis,

Glad to hear Bob's clarification about the D-tube Detroiter. We have all wondered if it was an attempt to "keep the secret". Particularly since the airplane pictured in the MAN article is clearly an I-Beamer. Thanks to Bob and you for answer to the question that we have all asked.

Bob McDonald built and flew an I-beam version and competed with it at VSC a few years ago. He won the top I-beam award there (what a surprise) with it. Power was an Aerotiger at the time but I believe it has been updated to a PA .40 lite.

Very pretty plane. Files an amazing pattern.....
