I'm currently building a Vintage Lion Tamer (42" version) and am missing the gear, decal and silkspan. I'll be using Monocote for the covering (wing only) and a .25 LA up front but I was wondering what the gear specs. were? All I have to go by is the assembly sheet - no real plans as such.

Barry Baxter shows having the plans. There is one pictured with a single gear. Here's the link.

I think that I recall tricycle gear under the Lion Tamer . .
-
Here is a Lion Tamer in all it's hideous glory...The gear shown is actually the nose gear - trike config.
Should I use 5/32 or 1/8? Do you think the 1/8 will support the model (main ldg gr)?
-
One eighth is fine.

Oh MY! That is something to see. Supposed to be PDQ's answer to the Super Ringmaster?? They failed miserably!! mw~ LL~
But like they say, even the ugly girls like to dance! %^@

That model was so ugly that no one would touch it. Seriously though it was'nt the best flyer either. However, that opinion is based on the one example that I ever saw, and in my defense even as a young lad who was nuts about model planes, it failed to impress.

AFAIK any more, it was merely the Circus King, with a box fuselage, and trike gear. The Circus King flew just as well as any Ringmaster of the era, which isn't saying a lot (IMO, the best flying profile of 1953 was the Veco Tomahawk {I can't recall if the original one came out early enough for OTS, but I don't think so}).
I built one Circus King from the kit, and scratchbuilt two or three more of them from the patterns I'd made before building the kit. Considering my poor flying skills during 1953 / 1954, my judgment about how well it flew is probably quite suspect. At some point in 1955, I started building a semi-original profile that looked much like the Veco Tomahawk, and shared that airfoil, but was built the way a Lightning Streak is, with 2 spars, a large square LE set into the front of ribs, and a built-up TE. I kept the Circus King stab and elevator, though.
Years later, my oldest kid had a Circus King that he really loved, but his didn't last any longer than my own first one had, whan I had been at his level of flying experience.

The main gear is fuselage mounted and 1/8th" wire is plenty adequate, probably even 3/32" if it is light. This is NOT a *big airplane*.

Whether it flies great or not it's neat to see someone building these old designs so they arn't
forgotten. Best of luck, I hope it does well !!!

I built one when I vwas a kid. It crashed like all the rest. I totally trashed the fuse, but the wing held up. I ended puting a TLAR Firecat fuse on ti with a 1/16" Firecat tail (what did I know?). The outboard staband elevator departed on the first flight, but I was able to FINALLY fly inverted with that bird. For that reason, it will always have a soft spot in my heart. Or is that a soft spot in my head????? ~>

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. :o
Perhaps some of you chaps need eye glasses? ;D
I think the Lion Tamer is purr-ty. y1
